I don't think a twist is necessary. Sometimes creators can get too focused on putting a plot twist that they forget that the twist needs to be elevate an already-great story, not hinge on the plot twist being the main course. I bet a lot of us has been burned by Hollywood/TV writers' obsession with "subverting your expectations" some years ago 
I like most of Studio Ghibli's films such as Mononoke Hime or Spirited Away, and they don't always use plot twists to make a good story. I didn't care for Your Name's plot twist since it required me to forget that smartphone screens & internet boards are always displaying date/time (I also didn't buy the two mains were in love so that took me out of the story, too).
