I’m obsessed with attempting to find real traditional dishes to make from other countries and cultures. We’re pretty lucky in America to have a wide-variety of different cultures’ food, but a lot tend to get “Americanized”. (Aka “Tex-Mex”. Things like that.)
So I thought it could be cool to share either a recipe of one of your favorite dishes, or just share with us your favorite dish from your own country/culture.
The area I grew up in California is known for it’s barbecuing. My favorite thing to eat from the BBQ besides shrimp are definitely artichokes. Below is a local-style recipe for grilling artichokes.
Ingredients
2 to 3 artichokes
1 to 2 teaspoons butter
Seasoning salt (or seasoning of your choice)
Artichoke sauce (or dipping sauce of your choice) - Some mayo mixed with Salsa works pretty well!
Directions
First, clean the artichokes, trim the leaves and pull the small bottom leaves away. Then steam them for about 20 minutes. After cooling, slice the artichoke in half and pull out the thorny leaves in the center. Refrigerate artichokes until you’re ready to grill (where I grew up we grill using oak wood). Depending on the temperature of your fire, grill about two minutes on each side. Baste them with butter and season with seasoning salt and serve with artichoke sauce, mayonnaise or dipping sauce of your choice.
Salsa
4 medium fresh tomatoes, chopped
½ cup finely diced brown onion
½ cup finely chopped green chiles
½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon Tabasco sauce
Yields 4 cups
Also, if you’re an artist and feeling up for it, feel free to draw an image if your character cooking or enjoying your dish and drop a link to your comic!
