My heart was pounding as the abhorrent beast stood above me.

From my reluctant protagonist:

"I’ve been down similar roads before, you see. You always lose something of yourself on the journey, even if everything seems fine in the end. Who I am is all I have anymore, so no, I wouldn’t join the team. I’m happy enough where I am.”

The word enough seemed to weigh heavier than the others.

I lowered my head and squeezed my fingers, my brother might have been the favorite but it came at a cost. In a way I was lucky not to have had our father's attention.

"You don't buy a three-bedroom house if you plan to move across the country months later."

"Eh!"

“I’M NOT AN UGLY JELLYFISH!” Alyx yelled, breaking his record of not seeming crazy.

“That looks broken.”

"ironic."

“My queen.” Okarg scrambled to his feet and bowed. “I hear and obey.”

Kennett gave him the stinkiest eye and growled, “Clifford, I got one nonconsecutive hour of sleep last night, don’t try me.”

Somehow, the prospect of a mini-fridge full of cans of coke was enough to make him at least consider picking up his junk.
