Posting on Tapas and Webtoons

I know that there's a benefit to posting on Webtoons, as well as Tapastic. For some reason I wanted to just have my comic specific to Tapastic, but it feels like that's harming my growth. Is it best to just post my comic on every web comic website there is? What's the best way to have promotion? I have a Facebook page and post every now and then on Instagram. What are some creative ways that you guys have promoted your web comics?

Question that you really want to ask yourself, "How much work do I want to put into this." Do you want to broaden your audience, they yeah post on both, do you need to do it for every webcomic site, not really. It's one thing if you're trying to go professional or something, it's another if this is purely a hobby. It doesn't hurt to post on both, but if you don't want to, then you don't have to.

I'm wanting to make it professional. I still have a lot to learn, and some of my art may not look full on professional yet, but I want to make this a career. As of right now, just being married and getting ready for a kid, I can't have my attention to it all day every day, but hopefully it becomes a career.

To Webtoons or not to Webtoons?

Generally speaking there's not a downside to posting several places, besides time spent. For example I post to both Tapas and Webtoons because saving the 800px wide pages for Webtoons doesn't take much time so I don't mind too much. Time is a real cost though, so keep that in mind if you start posting a bunch of places. For example, with my current comic if I were to drop one platform or the other because it was taking too much time, I'd drop Webtoons currently, just because my comic performs much better on Tapas.

My own weekly routine is written there as the 4th or 5th reply. The tl;dr version is: posts to social media (fb/twitter/instagram/reddit) & promotion on the forum (mostly the "newest page Jan 2019!" thread). Realistically unless you get the website to promote you themselves (either through being a premium creator, or things like the spotlights on Tapas) not a lot of readers will find you on their own, so you have to do the promotion legwork yourself. This is another time cost (I spend like an hour and a half each sunday doing this).

Creative Promotion?

One thing I do is take my thumbnails that I use for the episodes, and edit them into little "Update!" images like this:

idk if it really has a big effect on my promotion (vs. just posting the link and using the auto-preview image) but I think it's nicer and doesn't take much time to do.

Honestly, having mirrors has helped me a lot so yes. Have your comic on both.

Honestly, I have my Webtoon mirrored in both websites. I want to build an audience in both sites where some people from one place probably don't consume from another, so I'm hitting two fronts. Since my content doesn't change from one site to the next, it takes but a few minutes for me to mirror on Tapas, and the biggest extra work I have to do is actually just the thumbnails.

There's benefit to both sites. I personally love seeing all the comments and stuff I receive on Webtoons, but I feel like the community at Tapas is generally more friendly. Tapas has a lot more of a personal touch to it compared to Webtoons, so that's one thing to consider. However, it's very beneficial (for me) to post in both places. Webtoons can also connect to your patreon, and it will advertise it for you at the bottom of every update. Not to mention, Webtoons currently offers the possibility of them paying you if you hit certain goals. Not guaranteed, but it is a possibility.

The only big downfall to me is that Webtoons doesn't allow you to properly schedule your episodes, which can be very frustrating if you like to update consistently. Maybe one day they'll change it....

Personally I think I like Tapas best. If Webtoons had this really old Snorlax cookie that's been sitting on my desk for like over a year I'd probably like them...but they don't. And generally speaking I just think Tapas probably has more Snorlax cookies than Webtoons so that's something to consider.
