So i'm just about done with my first oneshot12 and I've been thinking about doing a sort action-y "metal gear solid" kind of comic but i've always kind of struggled with machinery, buildings, etc., so i was wondering if anyone could give me some links to some tutorials and some advice. Also, anything on drawing fight scenes and stuff would be super rad, too. smile

I don't have any specific tutorials for you but about fight scene, I would suggest to watch movies and read comic that involve fighting.
Movies for camera angles and composition.
And Comics for how it translate in comic format.
I, personally, like when everything is clear specially in comic because the shot are still so you don't have the camera movement to create dynamism, I don't like unnecessary close-up shot, most tend to believe it gives dynamism but I find it distractive more than anything. I want to see anticipation, the setting, what's going in the area, the actual movements of the character that actually gives the dynamism etc.
But it's my preference obviously haha.

About machinery and building, if you are talking about how to draw them, learn the basics of perspective and try to draw as often as possible random machineries and buildings.
If you talk about the design and the architecture, get some inspirations and references, study them and give your own twist. It's pretty similar to how you design a character, try to understand the history, why you are shaping things like that and so on ^^

Well, first off, let me congratulate you for finishing your first work! It looks really good, and since I think you already know the basics for this gig, I think what you need is sort of a specific lessons rather than just general teachings.

Am, like for fight scenes, try to get yourself some animation guide to understand the way you should portray movement in order to create a powerful image that pretty much captures a whole move on its own. Also, if you find yourself struggling with fight moves and that kind of stuff perhaps you should watch martial arts exhibitions videos, for example, and try to study some basic poses or like the basics stances of fight so your characters would look more natural.

As for buildings and machinery, well, my two cents here would be patience, lots and lots of patience. See, unlike organic backgrounds -like the ones you nailed in your one-shot-, mechanism and buildings need of a lot more work, because they need you to understand how an engine works for instance or how the weight of a roof works so the building makes sense. On top of that, that kind of background takes a lot of time considering you'll have to work with rulers and all that jazz, so I think using building pictures as a reference and trying to copy and study them would be a good first step. Like testing the waters and see what you are about to get into.

I don't have much experience myself, but I tried to think what would I do if I were you. I wish you luck in this new adventure and just know that I respect and admire you for being determinate and I think, if you persevere just like you did before, you totally got this!

Best,
Hoshie.

P.S. : Am, I don't know if this would help you, but I use some of the guides and tutorials collected in this sites, hopefully you find something of use too. http://anatoref.tumblr.com1 & http://anatomicalart.tumblr.com

thank you both for responding! yes, the points you both gave will def help a lot in figuring this stuff out & where to start.
@nixxusnibelheim I've actually tried this before a while back open_mouth but lately i've slacked in fight study, so i'll def to try it again

@hoshiemononoke Thank you for your kind comments & sub! ;v; I didn't think about animation guides! open_mouth those will come in handy & ur right in studying references, it's just hard for me to find good building references for what i'm looking for ;; but i'll def give it a go again for this next project :>
thanks again!
