So a bunch of us here are writing comics and novels that have like a hell ton of little updates and are just always on the hunt for songs from soundcloud (and it has to be soundcoud, since unfortunately youtube won't link to here) that will fit with whatever vibe we are writing. Especially the novelists--like when I was doing comic updates this just wasn't an issue since I had a week between updates and never...ever used music, but for novels--that's just so many updates, man.

So this is a thread where you can drop songs that you like from soundcloud--bands that you wish got more notice, songs you just love so much, and songs that maybe you made and would love if a novelist would use for one of our chapters-- whatever it is, just drop a link to the song itself, or maybe a link to a playlist you have, maybe let us know about the song's vibe so we can tell if it fits what we're writing or not, and we can all help eachother have an easier time digging through soundcloud for chapter songs.

I only know this one, because I used to follow her music and ended up liking some.
She has royalty-free collections and suitable for fantasy series:

Since it's a soundcloud link that we drop in our novels, it doesn't have to be copyright free, right? Cuz I have absolutely not been doing that haha.

I am bad at understanding copyright and such thing, but to be safe I will try to use royalty-free ones if possible, and allowed for commercial use.

Some people restrict their work not to be used commercially. While you might not write premium novel, if you open ko-fi donation or patreon for it, does it count as using it for commercial purposes?

The work of artist above falls under CC BY 4.0

Good points. Yeah, I wouldn't think it's a problem because it's not actually in your content--unlike putting music in a youtube video which is something you claim as your own, this is just a link to soundcloud that sits on your page. Since it's completely separate from the work, I wouldn't think that it would count as commercial even if you do make money off of your novel or comic--since the link itself to soundcloud generates revenue for soundcloud and the person that owns it and not myself, even if it's played on Tapas. (least, that's what I assume happens, since I know that's how links work with Youtube even when they're embedded off of youtube) I mean if an artist ever asked to take it down I would though, obvi.

I went searching through forum posts and didn't see any info regarding this, but it is kinda late so maybe I just missed it--does anyone who knows more want to weigh in if they know whether or not using a copyrighted song would be a problem in a link?

Aha! An opportunity to plug some awesome music friends!

You know who are some really talented and often criminally underappreciated people? Basically the entire Homestuck Music Team outside of Toby Fox. They are all fantastic composers making wonderful soundtrack music, and really didn't get enough publicity for their work on the comic. I'd highly recommend checking out their profiles:

Nucleose1 - Videogamey, synthetic, rich soundscapes, often intense.
EidolonOrpheus - Big epic sound, quite intense.
Well Manicured Man - Melody driven, orchestral synth.
SiAsInSilence1 - Videogamey, well-structured.
Crazy-81 - Playful, some good silly tracks.
Imbrog2 - Fun instrumentation, adventure feel.

Pretty sure most of these people would also take on commissions for an original piece if asked. They're really nice and easy to work with and very affordable, so I'd recommend it!

oh yeah, that's like the only thing I know about Undertale--the music is rad--so it's cool that there are more musicians, I honestly up till now thought Toby Fox did all of it haha

Toby Fox did do all the music on Undertale, and he's for sure a super-talented guy! But the Homestuck music team, as you might guess from the sheer size of all the albums on Bandcamp (Homestuck vols 9 and 10 have some track art by meeee) definitely make up more music than one person could make in the required turnaround!

holy crap there's that much music?? huh I never knew, I always thought it was a handful of tracks, and then Toby went and did Undertale after that. I forget all the time how incredibly massive Homestuck is.
