so after owning a tumblr and recently deleting it to make one specifically for my comic, i realised i have no idea what i should be doing on here XDD

like how do you... tumblr... without getting into the really dumb stuff the site has to offer

Just know that once you get into tumblr there is no going back with all the endless scrolling down to the bottom of the abyss XD that was my experience when I first started but it's calmed down now. And simply just follow the stuff you like instead of dwelling into weird stuffs, but again they're just everywhere cough I may be involved cough

And before I share my tumblr I need to warn you that I have NSFW drawings there besides some fanart in case that's not your thing xD

tbh as long as you tag everything as much as you can you'll have your content seen. The website is getting increasingly hard to navigate so if you don't have it yet, try getting an xKit installed to make it a bit more customisable.

• post art!
• post about stuff you like! fanart is one of the quickest ways to get eyes on your work, but like anywhere else, building an actual following takes time. If you make a blog that ONLY posts about your comic, though, then often the only people likely to follow it are people who already like your comic. If you don't really do fanart, then posting non-comic-specific art can also be a way to find new followers!
• Some people almost never reblog other stuff and post EXCLUSIVELY ART. Some people reblog a bunch of stuff they like and are more casual. Both can be fun blogs to follow! Follow your heart.
• only the first five tags show up in a global search; everything after that is just for your personal blog organisation. So your first five tags on a post should be the things people are likely to search!! I have "# shazz art" as a tag so you can easily browse all of my art posts, but I won't put it in my first five tags on a fanart piece.
• if you're posting about something that other people post about, search the tag (tumblr.com/tagged/ [insert thing you're looking up here] ) to see what other tags people use. This is especially useful for fanart, since sometimes there are multiple ways a character could be tagged and the fandom will kind of settle on one they use more often than others.
• if anyone you follow posts about stuff that raises your blood pressure, just unfollow them. This includes if someone you agree with keeps reblogging annoying things to debunk them -- that's still putting that stuff into your feed. You don't gotta deal with that nonsense if you don't want to. If you curate your feed ruthlessly, tumblr is a much more pleasant experience!!
• accept that fanstuff will always get more notes than your original work, and don't let that make you bitter! I have like 2000-some-odd followers from back when I did some popular undertale comics, but while my fanart will get hundreds or thousands of notes depending on the fandom, my original content usually gets 20-50 notes. This is normal! I just think of them on different scales.

some additions to shazzbaa:

• blacklisting things (tags, words, urls, whatever) you don't want to see is your friend (at least on desktop with xkit, dunno how it is with mobile, I think they implemented some new features site-wide but I'm not 100% sure)
• reblog your pics several times a day after posting them, people live in different timezones after all and use tumblr at different hours of the day
• queue/schedule posts if you are too busy
• mobile doesn't have pages, so make sure to link to the important stuff in your description
• think about a proper organization-tag system before you start posting
• make sure to actually uncheck/check (don't quite remember) the field where tumblr automatically only shows your blog as dashboard (it's suuuuper annoying to deal with, you can see it in the link you have, usually it's URL.tumblr.com but you got tumblr.com/blog/URL)
• there's actually quite a lot that tumblr implements automatically so go through that setting page thoroughly
• you can also follow tags you are interested in and they show up on the sidebar which brings you directly to the specific tag
• I think that's it!

I've always felt uneasy about reblogging my own posts.... But I never thought about time zones! Maybe that's the reason why almost no one has found my tumblr Well, I guess it's time to reblog!

Whelp most you do with tumblr is post and then reblog stuff which is like a retweet or favorite and a like option. Also tumblr is so poorly put together that your work can have a billion notes but only 3 followers gained from it because its hard to source where it came from. Very frustrating thing to get used to.

Uhh not so much a tip but an interesting feature I like is the
reblog graphs, you can turn it on through settings under the tab called labs.
You can see how people tag your art, they sometimes gush about it especially
if its fanart. I enjoy reading them :'D (feels so stalker)

I always tag my reblogs simply with "#reblog" so I can find them and delete later so my blog looks neat and not like 100% self-promo xD
but yeah, I think everyone does self-reblogs, definitely helps you get seen by your followers

Tumblr can be a weird site but it works if you need inspiration, although I hate the search mode, it's 70% 18+ content or weird trash...

reviving this thread I guess. anyway I just started on tumblr not too long ago and I'd appreciate at least one follow on there or something. I honestly don't know how to get noticed on there or to really use it in general, but maybe it's because I haven't been on long enough
