I’ve been developing a script for an urban/modern fantasy series and I’m looking for an artist. I’ve got someone available for inks and I might want to tap a colorist down the line, but for the purposes of this post I’m seeking (at the bare minimum) someone who is interested in doing pencilwork. Essentially, this position has a lot of flexibility.

The Story
One Wyrd Trick is about a waitress from suburban Mississippi who travels all the way to The Big Apple. She’s searching for a cure for a magical curse, but instead she finds herself playing amateur detective to a kidnapping. The story takes place in a day-after-tomorrow setting where wild magic is a real problem and only the very adventurous have learned how to control magic for themselves.

My Credentials
My webcomic, Opportunities22, is a good example of my writing style and abilities, though obviously very different subject matter. The first Opportunities book will come to about 300 pages, which is pretty hefty. I’m writing the first One Wyrd Trick to be a much tighter story--it should be about 100 pages.

Payment
This is a negotiable, paid position. I intend to put together a pitch which should include finished concept and character art and the first few scenes of the comic--though clearly I’ll need art for the rest of the book once the comic has a revenue source. I will be paying entirely out of pocket for any art produced for the pitch, and am comfortable paying professional rates for professional work.

Deadline
Though there is no hard deadline if I’m able to fill the position quickly enough, it would be really exciting if we are able to submit a pitch to the Creators for Creators grant for which submissions close November 1st. Otherwise I’ll be looking for appropriate publishers with open submission windows to submit to going forwards.

How to Apply
Please send your portfolio to quadriphonic@gmail.com and please make sure that you include pieces with backgrounds--not just character art. (Also, it would be great if you can show ability to draw animals and monsters.) If you have any questions feel free to ask here or via email.

This is a fantastic call for collaboration. Your writing seems solid, you're transparent about the project, you're willing to pay artists for their work. One thing that I think might help increase the number of eyeballs reaching this thread is to ask artists to reply to this thread with some samples of their work so that you can reach out to them. Bumping the thread will get more artists to look at it.

At the very least, I'm bumping it now, because this is one of the stronger collab calls that I've seen here.

Fudge it, I'm busy as hell but this sounds like too good of storyline to pass up. Even if I don't make it, I would still like to support this series when it publishes. If you guys like, I'm a published comic book artist and I can help point you to some publishers that are accepting submissions.

EDIT: Sent an e-mail!

Thanks for the suggestion!

I think that's a great idea and if anybody wants to post samples here I'd love to see them!

I'd like to say that this post is well done and your project plan seems pretty solid so far.

Also, some basic questions that may benefit other potential applicants:

  • how many pages do you need for the pitch?
  • are you also in need of cover art or promotional artwork? (These are nice-to-haves for a publisher pitch but I tend to see these in Kickstarter projects)

Here's a little bump for visibility. Cheers!

Hey, great questions.

First, I figure the first 10-15 pages would be good for a pitch for a story of this length, and in order to introduce the principle characters.

Second, I think I'm holding off on making decisions about cover art and promotion until later. Like you say, definitely important for Kickstarter, but seems like jumping the gun for pitching.

Hey, everybody.
Thanks so much for your responses and feedback.
It looks like I've found an artist for the project which is really exciting!
