"The media is already second-guessing the military. Truth is, finding every SCUD launcher is like trying to find all the Kenworth tractor trailers in Kansas."
Col. David Sawyer, 23rd TFW, US Air Force
I've got a few favorite quotes from this next one.
"A military man can scarcely pride himself on having smitten a sleeping enemy."
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto
Given that I tell true stories, I'm interested in the truth, and I felt I had to rectify the ghastly way he was misquoted in WW2 movies like Pearl Harbor and Tora! Tora! Tora! They made him sound frightened. "Oh no, we've awakened a sleeping giant." Yuck. While I recognize making him seem like a coward may have been effective propaganda during the actual war, it's still not true, and there especially was no excuse for it afterward. So I quoted him correctly. It's wittier and more poignant this way anyway, especially given the historical context.
It was hard to pick a favorite quote from this, as I've got the eloquent Eleanor Roosevelt, the uncompromising Jacqueline Cochran, and... well... all of US Congress quoted or paraphrased among many others. But I had to give this one to Admiral Yamamoto. I could change my mind, however.
