Another thing of note is also picking and choosing your memes. Some things will feel forced (and some are), some things might be OOC to the characters you want to promote, or it's run its course on social media and people want to see an ironic take on it instead.
For example, I'm not going to use the astronaut being held up in front of Earth because it fits no one at this moment in my story and is out of place, but I can use weird tumblr/twitter exchanges like "someone who is good at the economy please help me" because, even though the tone of the comic is a little more serious, there are breather moments and quick exchanges that are similar to them.

edit: OH one big thing I forgot, but this is for anyone getting started. Don't redraw someone else's comic that became a meme without permission. This was a huge problem with webcomics like Hark! A Vagrant because it basically becomes reposting with extra effort. It's always better to make your own interpretation of a text or stock picture!
