I absolutely SUCK at drawing characters in city streets and buildings in general. Can anyone post their pages that take place in cities outdoors so I can get some inspiration? Can be yours or someone else's!

It's not a page, but I get a lot of inspiration from Purple Hyacinth2 on Webtoon when it comes to city streets and architecture (and character placement/poses within them).

My latest episode has a city scene at the beginning.
I'm nowhere near perfect but I force myself to draw them in order to improve.

If you live in a big city, go for walks around different areas and take lots of shots from lots of different angles. Don't be afraid of taking too many, You can use these as a base for your drawings later.
If not, go onto pinterest/instagram/etc and make a mood board of city photography. Try to find as many angles as possible.
If you have an ideal city in mind, try to focus on getting references from there, as different big cities have very different moods.

From there, start tracing the photos so you can study the lines of the buildings at different perspectives. Look at how the people in the photos interact in the setting. Once you get that, then you can start working on your own setting.

Heck those are incredibly good. I need to up my game. Do you know a helpful guide or tutorial?

Ahh it's a lovely day in Joysgard. Just kidding, the weather is crap and there are monsters.

I mostly use Manchester for reference when doing street scenes with a bit of improvisation over the top. 3D models are also handy, especially for cars, but I always draw over them rather than plonking them down so that everything feels cohesively gritty as one world.

I grew up drawing more cities and architecture than I did people, so cityscapes are kind of my natural habitat. Never looked up a tutorial or guide on cities, so I'm sorry I can't offer you any resources there.

I think that as long as the characters seem like they belong in that environment rather than pasted in, it does its job.

Lemme try an example:

This is a cool shot, but the contrast between the hard-outlined character and the painted city does take me out of the story, which is what an establishing shot like this shouldn't do. Outlining the buildings that are closer to "us" would help our character "fit" into his environment.
But it does a great job of establishing tone, which is something an establishing shot should do. (I'm getting late-night gloom with some blues or jazz in the background, like those detective movies.)

Perspective is also something a lot of people would say is important for environmental shots, but I can say it's up to the art style. My art style is big on getting that 3D space across, but I've seen plenty of art styles that forego realism. Like I said at the start, as long as the characters seem like they belong in that space (art-style wise) any city shot works.

I'm adding this portion in an edit because I realize I didn't actually talk about how you can get 3D space across. (In case that's what you came for.) Before starting on a scene, you should decide where the horizon would be, and your space expands outwards from that horizon line. You can use a 3D modelling program or ye old perspective grids for help, but they all lead to the same concept.
In the image above, I notice the windows on the right side of the street not fitting with the building's angle. If you imagine the windows going on forever, the "rows" of windows would approach the horizon line.

wow that is crudely drawn

At first I was also really bad at it, now after I study perspective and work constantly at it, I am a bit better. But there are a lot of scenes that make me struggle a lot. I think when you work constantly on it, you get better
Also the colors are very important, so that the characters don't stand out too much. Else I always think that it looks unnatural.

I don't know why my pictures get always cropped when I upload them here. Just click on them to see it -.-

Sure thing, I can post some of my city pages here!, Obviously, Spoiler warning for my comic TLC

(All of these scenes take place in chapter 7 or later cause I didn't have much confidence in drawing buildings before then. also they are out of order)

Hope this helps some with ideas for setting/backgrounds! If you like the art be sure to check out my comic!
