WIP of MAOR chapter 4's cover

From above pic: Upper left is pencil ref., bottom is value ref. I used yellow color pencil for basic perspective lines.

Not easy to draw the structures in fisheye perspective as no ruler is used. The effect is not strong, more like an ultra-wide 20mm lens. I hope it looks natural enough.

Not totally please with the inking because i may've inked too much outlines & details (I want to leave the white-out highlight areas as sunshine, for a Hi-key watercoloring.) It's a daunting task as I rarely use the medium over 7 years. Best way to do it is to make watercolor color references first.

But that has to wait for a while-- after i finish the comicpages for next comic update.

Want to ink-sketch some of my story items.

For worldbuilding: Because there's not much leisure going on in my village, so I design a card game for them to play.

A card game for group leisure or for betting items. In Maor's village it's prohibited to play in daytime. A rare premium item to get a hold of. (the 2 coins are not part of the set, just size comparison)
30 cards full deck .

Unfortunately my MC will never play the cards, however it will be debut and played by side characters somewhere in Act 2.

My first introduction here. I am like a hermit from the far east, you may find my reserved nature and mysticism tad annoying. Am i roleplaying? Maybe... or maybe not. That's the nature. This is wonderful forum so I might want to leave some marks on occasion. I'm interested to see more comic related topics-- I would like to add some if chance allow. Mine haven't started quite yet but these are my top 3 inspirations probably: 1> Sonic the hedgehog cartoons. The early years of furriness had invaded me too deep 2> Village life. I might be romanticizing it cos' i never have that life. Love to live in one. 3> 'My Girl' the movie. Coming-of-age story material.

My protagonist: a simpleton boy who is getting used of his new way of life but feeling discontent and a bit sad. Guess he is a weak underdog.

I wanted to do a comic remake from my childhood, which Inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog SatAM, and some Isekai stories. It's more battle shounen-like. Over the years it has becoming more and more elaborate & detailed in my head: a large cast of characters, plots and places... I feel that it's too large and ambitious for my first webcomic. So i decided to tell a much smaller scope, intimate and grounded of a story: a backstory of a certain new member of a group. It's all happening in the same un…

I do like some shonens. Mine is more adventure/drama but also has some shounen elements in the later story. Right now it's the just at the beginning of the Pagoda arc: where Maor would go to the distant pagoda and meet acquaintances over there. (The 1/4 of the 'Hero's Journey' template) . I'm a planner for my very first webcomic 'MAOR', i start writing story drafts on 2016, taking my time until l like the story, and started preparing more tightly on 2019. I do have some "must-haves" but that's just how i do it. Confirm the design and look of the main characters, 85~90% is fine when i start the series. For me, every page i've posted of my series is okay for print. The thing is i have a reference sample and as long as i maintain the quality, it's good enough for 5"x7.5" manga size prints or smaller. Not particular really. I'm more excited creating contents I like, than chasing a high industry standard. I do expect a bit more of myself every year and that's about it. For comic series I prefer art consistency. I'm instinctively a 'big-picture' person and I always have that mental images of the finished product and have samples and references to keep track with. I just work on what I feel are the weaker parts in overall-- like certain shading/toning methods, sound effects(onomatopoeia), and…

Dialogues/Monologues. I'm from Asia and my English level wasn't great for western audience. Outside the translated mangas I find many webcomics use phrases, jargons, slangs that I can't come up with. i tried to write "beautiful" monologues and they feel forced and fake. Maybe I shouldn't write dialogues like a westerner. I'll try to write as good as a simple translated manga would be. The good side is most international audience will understand my lines.

I have a mantra when I decided to work on my very first webcomic series: Gotta be brave. I use it to remind myself because i'm not brave at all about putting myself out there. I actually am nervous/scared of getting attention, the bigger the attention the worse it gets. My anthro comic is niche as hell and I know it. I'm not a brave person but I have be brave for my works, at least. I need to be able to get through the whole series to tell my complete story, be confident and not to chicken out…

The "uniqueness" actually comes from limitations i have for my webcomic, and my art integrity (stubborness). Artwise, I don't call myself an artist. I draw because i like my characters. For this comic i mix with a bit of my childhood artstyle. My character looks can be ranged from manga-like to cartoonish. They're generally 5~6 head/body proportion. I actually wish i don't solidify my ideas so quickly. Whenever I see my characters/designs/plots sorta works, it just becomes almost absolute. It is a good-bad personal trait. I design minor characters and background characters very quickly because I don't put too much effort to the things that are less matter. If your characters matters to the story, don't rush it. Take more time to ponder on it or ask for opinions. I also input rules to my story so that I don't go wander off to possibiliti…

(Sorry I was taking too much time writing this) How did i go about making my rules? Hmm how do i write about this... Take my 'No Flashbacks' for example. First, I had to first know my story is small enough before getting this idea of not adding flashbacks. First I create my protagonist, set up his personality, abilities & overall journey/missions, and then create characters around him, plot wise. Main characters Protagonist & also the story-driven characters: mostly his parent, or someone who always near and support him, or a catalyst character he met in later story. Cicadas, Crickets are the inspiration, but I' gotta be creative not to copy entirely.

I may add 2 additional insects into my Bestiary (Maor Extra) in August. Very looking forward to it!
