Hey, everyone, my name is Jaz and recently, I've decided to start a publishing studio with the launch of my first comic, VR.

This thread, and similar ones (Update #2, etc.) will just kind of be me talking about my experience and journey as it unfolds. I figure that while I can get feedback and advice on what I'm trying to accomplish both as a business and a creator, it might also eventually prove to be a good resource for people looking to do the same thing! I'd also love to make some creator (writing or art) friends in the process! So all around, I think it's a win-win.

For the longest time, I'd always seperated my art from my writing. I've posted on A03, Wattpad, and more recently here, but I'd never thought about combing my love for writing and drawing into a comic until maybe 3 years ago, when I got the idea for VR.

At the time I'd been picturing the novel made into a movie, and how cool it would be to see the visuals I'd been imaging. But then I thought, why not just draw it? So here we are, haha. I spent the better part of 2 years developing the world and characters, and have only just now put enough together to try to launch in January (2019).

I knew at the time, since I knew this was going to start as a webcomic, that I wanted to have guest artists appear in it. And that's when the business idea started, on more or less a commission-base employment of artists. (I'll get into that more in a later update when I've hammered all the kinks of the payment system I'm developing.)

Right now, my small team and I are trying to get our website up and running so that most questions can be directed there with full answers. But in the mean time ...

Are there any people on Tapas that are thinking about starting a publishing company or a brand of comics like Marvel or DC? Are any already doing that? What are your thoughts on it? Do you have any advice? I'd love to make this thread series as informative as possible, so please feel free to share your thoughts and/or ask for mine!

OH. And here's our first comic, VR!

If any of you have started your brand of comics on Tapas, please feel free to link them! and swap stories of your experience with me!

 This is my favorite topic ever!! I have mad respect for entrepreneurs. I have a brand that will launch 2018-2019. Tapas has helped me a lot and I want to make a comic to support my brand.

There are too many things I would like to say but I will keep it simple.
Have a good quality product oriented to the target you want to sell to. Have a competitive price and a good communication with the clients.

Get trustworthy people. Please avoid diva artists, irresponsible collaborators, or anyone who contributes to a bad climate in your business. Try to not chose your team based on friendship, if your best friends happen to be the best workers that a total win! But always choose the most qualified with the best attitude regardless of personal relationships. Get people who want you to succeed!

And the main advice: Get business management education. You don't have to become an expert but at least have an idea of how to manage money, clients, payments. etc. At least in my country, small businesses don't survive more than 2 years. No matter how talented you are if you neglect how to make money. In fact, crappy products can become sustainable when there is a good management. Sometimes we spend so much time on the product that we forget that is just the tip of the iceberg. Good luck!!! I will sub to your comic right now so I won't lose any of your evolution.

slowly raises hand ...........ME........

But very nice that you're already got a team ready to rock and roll! I very much admire you for taking that big ole leap and actually doing it! At the end of December, when I receive my Business degree, I'm planning on opening up a publishing house using the resources my ex publisher (and long time friend) gave me before bankrupting all three of his publishing houses and caused a bunch of problems for everyone including myself dipping out!

I have to say its an experience, sometimes a hard one, and if things dont seem to work out, please dont give up. It took Walt Disney three times before something finally stuck. There's my two dimes for ya! <3

THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thank you for the advice, I will keep it in mind! And yeah, I dont keep negative people in my life regardless so everyone I'm working with is super excited for my vision and super happy to be here.

And oof, yeah we're working on creating a marketing and management system now, its probably the hardest thing out of anything we've done so far.

But I'd love to hear about what you're doing if you want to share! Is it also in publishing?

Wah, thank you! It was/is a pretty scary leap, but Im more than sure its worth it. And good luck!!! Let me know about your journey when you start!

Also, sorry that happened to you, geez. Has everything settled down since then?

And thank you! I will keep my head high and work hard to make my dream a reality.

Exactly! there is nothing better than sharing a dream and goals with your team! <3 I make toys. I have been working with a partner that already has a business and I'm about to launch my own brand. I have been working on this for years but I'm starting over with a new website, social media profiles and new concepts. Later I would love to have a series of comics based on the toys, so maybe we could work together at some point or I could rely on you to publish/design/ manage the comic  But It will take some time because I need to focus first on the first collections.

Glad to see you putting more thought on your future and dream. I would say to study management and get a feel and knowledge in on how succesful publisher have manage their finances. Many forget the administration aspect is just as important as creative input.

Beside publishing in tapas and webtoo, I suggest having a website where you have more control and can be more in touch and of course have traffic all to yourself.

Omg I bet! It makes my stomach flutter just thinking about the leap you had to make! But please, keep me updated! <3 I'd appreciated it if you did!

Everything settled down however, I didnt like the situation he placed me in. He was my publisher but also my boss because I had interned for more than a year with him so when everything suddenly fell while I was away at college, it was just me to look through everything and try to contact others about this. He screwed over 300+ authors who all wanted answers XD But now everything is floating more or less.

AND YAS. Make that dream a reality!!

Well, once I've finished my current comic which I'm using to polish up my comic skills, I'm gonna be launching my brand properly.
At the moment the Jahanniverse is a work in progress but once my co-writer and I have ironed everything out we're hoping to release way more. My current work is the first story, an introduction to the universe, but we're working on a number of scripts that we'll be putting to pages once this one is all wrapped up.
But in short yes, I'm making steps towards setting up a brand for my universe which I hope to take as far as I can.

That's so cool! I'm so far away from thinking of merch for my story, or any of them, really. It's definitely something I have to start thinking about, cause I would love for that to be a thing!

Will do! Thanks for the advice! 2 of my team members are pretty good with business management. In fact, one went to school for it. I also have a few friends who started a publishing company, whose brain I intend on picking the first chance I get!

As for our website, we're actually finishing it up now. I'm hoping it can go up within the month, and that I can share that update with you guys!

Glad to hear this and that you have a good plan in place  Hope to see the website, if you have a design or layout you can share and get some feedback for it.

I wish you success!!

@375 I will keep you posted for sure! And I'm glad things are more or less settling down for you all. That must have been really nerve wracking.

@wumblebumarts Nice! That's great, I'm glad you're not giving up on it. Keep us posted when it starts up again, okay?

Thank you very much! And yeah it was ;w;

Hello,

Starting a publishing business is a daunting task. You have to know the business from inside out and your risks.

I think most of you already mentioned about knowing your market and target audience. Also, study the supply and demand of your content. I almost forgot, building your audience on social media.

In my experience, I started this as a hobby with one title in 2016. Fast forward to present time, we have more than 12 titles and have published 7 books. Two more titles will be published later this year. We're only in business for over 2 years and we've presented at conventions all over US.

We launched our exclusive webcomic site as well to compete against Webtoons/Lezhin/Tapas.

Hey! I've seen your stuff before! Cough, for research, cough.

Thank you so much for writing in! And yes, I was very overwhelming with the thought of how daunting it is, but even still I really wanted to pursue it, which is why I know its worth it. I'm ready to roll witht he punches and learn as I go until I can make it work!

That's amazing that you've come so far in such a short amount of time! Truly incredible, you should post a how-to or your experience, I would love to pick your brain
