Why Tapas over webtoon?

Anyone have a preface for platform, be it as a reader or creator?
Or do you love them both equally?

I publish on both, Webtoon is good and all but I find it hard to find readers on Webtoon and on Tapas it's not as hard or demotivating

Series name: Sengoku Jidai: UNTOLD
Genre: Action|adventure|comedy|fantasy|war
Description: follow the adventures of Hiro and his newly found master as they navigate through the warring nation of Japan to uncover troublesome mysteries. Along the way they encounter demons that threaten the already fragile peace.

I initially went with Tapas over Webtoon for my comic because, at the time, Webtoon did not have an automatic update scheduler and Tapas did. That was literally the deciding factor for me. Now that Webtoon also has an update scheduler, I see no reason why new comic creators shouldn't just post to both platforms to try and reach the widest audience possible.

Tapas because I write novels too and I like having my work in one place.

Also I'm not a fan of Webtoon's harsh censorship rules for canvas creators, can't even show sideboob or cleavage for god's sake. While Tapas requires censoring too for certain imagery, it's waaaay more lax than WT.

For reading, I like both almost equally, Tapas gives you a broader spectrum but also makes you pay for some good stories. Webtoon on the other hand only makes you pay for a pass to read ahead of time.
For posting/creating, Tapas is my go-to because I write novels, as well as draw comics (unposted) both, have an update scheduler but Webtoon doesn't let you get as much attention as Tapas.

So for Readers I suggest/prefer Webtoon
And for Creators I suggest/prefer Tapas

App:
Webtoon wins for indie authors.
It's easier to find new comics by indie authors on Webtoon than Tapas.
The webtoon app interface is also easier to operate.

Support from readers:
Tapas wins.
Tapas ink helps small authors, while Webtoon sets a very high bar for readers to be able to support their indie authors (with their 1K subs and 40k monthly views).

Numbers of audience:
Obvs I dont have the stats, but I think Webtoon has larger audience generally speaking.
For titles that are posted on both platforms, the number of subs on Webtoon is usually larger than Tapas.
But I have a weird experience for my own comics: one title has far more readership and subscribers on Webtoon, while the other one is more popular on Tapas. Idk why...

Why oh why do WT not give you a notification when someone gives you a comment.

Why oh why would I ever stay at a place where I can’t communicate with my readers?

What do numbers give me if they can’t speak?

Why do I have to verify my age every time I click on a WT link and then get the front page and not the series I want to read.

Why oh why are there so many people at such a place where the most basics are so bad???

What can WT give me that Tapas can’t ??? More empty numbers of no-names readers???

No thank you. I stay here!

Tried WT twice now and gave up twice.

Both!! I can't think of a good reason as a creator not to post on both... Given the amount of effort spent on content what's a few extra minutes so readers can find you on either platform?

As a reader, I prefer Wt - app is way less buggy and better organized. As a creator, Tapas is better - in addition to facilitating this forum we get some nicer tools for interacting with audience. Both have strengths and weaknesses.

I post on both but prefer tapas - both as a creator and reader (though, I'm a desktop not an app user)
on tapas:
- I don't have to worry that I'll get an episode deleted for showing 1 cm of skin too much, without any notice may I add
- I get notified when someone comments and when I answer them they get notified as well and so I'm not screaming into a void
- I get notified when a series I'm subscribed to gets updated (if you get any such updates outside of the app on webtoon I have yet to find it)
- I can post episodes between already scheduled ones
- there is no easily abused scoring system
- series link consists of series name instead of random id
- and from my experience, more mature and polite readers

I actually have a preference for WEBTOON, but only because of visibility and readership. I have 10x the audience size over there than I do here. I also like that their Originals are free-to-read, I hate paywalls.

For everything else, though, Tapas wins. It has way better social features, and far less censorship. Given they're both owned by Korean media giants now, if Tapas doesn't have to increase censorship, WEBTOON really have no excuse for how stringent theirs is. (The reason usually being Korean media law.)

People are nicer here. Idk how old most viewers are on WT but I saw many rude comments there. Almost never on Tapas though. In addition, Tapas staff members seem to care for the creators. I don't feel close to WT staffs.

I've been considering branching out onto webtoons in the near future but my question to folks on the platform is how much control you have over the comment section compared to here on Tapas. I know what some parts of the audience are like especially when it comes to certain kinds of content so i wanna know if i can delete/block like here because i think that would be my deciding factor

i'm already aware that webtoons leads in terms of audience size but that's all i can really see as being a "pro" to being on their site alongside bigger variations in popular/promoted genres

Even though I’m on both platforms, these are my biggest gripes on Webtoon. You pretty much have to cycle through every update to find comments. I wonder if readers know that creators don’t get notified or do they assume that we think we’re too good to respond.

You can 'report' comments, but there is no 'delete' on WT unless they are yours. Honestly, their comment system is awful.

Comment moderation.

That's all you need sometimes. I might not get enough comments in my works to warrant that just yet, but I want to save future me the trouble. If I ever get a WT mirror, it's going to be scheduling posts ahead and not looking back.

I prefer Tapas in terms of community. I can make friends here, like minded people.

And for that its helped with my anxiety. A little bit but still better off than what i was.

I liked webtoon starting out but once the views legit turned to ZERO for two months it bummed me out. My arts good and everything so i assume it wasnt the typical long scroll or lgbtq story which im not going to shit on. Because you do you and i cant change what people like so im not gonna bother. But it just meant i moved to Tapas.

And well, even if money is low or non existant. Im learning alot and enjoying myself more on here as opposed to webtoons when and if on the rare chance someone comments and its something i can think of to reply to. Ill do it and enjoy the fact someone is paying attention to my story.

So Tapas at the moment hands down.

As a reader: Webtoon wins. It has a much cleaner UI, less invasive ads (I lost the count of how many times I had to quickly close the Tapas app because of awfully loud video ads), all series are available for everyone with no paywalls involved, bookmarks seem to work better overall, finding canvas series is much easier and doesn't feel like I have to jump through a ton of hoops just to find them. Also, recommendations that are actually based on my own genre preferences, omg.

As a creator: Tapas has overall a much more interactive community, better tools for creators (you don't have to schedule episodes in the exact order they're supposed to come out, you can reorder episodes, you get notifications for comments/followers/whatever like you're supposed to, you're free to delete spam/rude/unwanted comments) and makes it much easier to gain a few cents thanks to Ink donations, while the requirements for Webtoon are pretty damn ridiculous. So, as far as the community goes, Tapas definitely wins.

However... Webtoon has a bigger audience, offers better chances for visibility (especially if you post under a small-ish genre) and isn't as narrowly focused on a single genre/style as Tapas seems to be, which, again, means more chances for indie creators who don't fall under a very specific category to get noticed. Granted, manga, fantasy and romance are still pretty big on Webtoon, but they don't seem to be the ONLY genre that is promoted on there... unlike Tapas, which, I'm afraid, lately feels more and more like I stepped into the romance manga section of a comic shop, rather than a platform for indie authors who write a wide range of genres and have tons of different styles. The home page here looks very... homogeneous and to find anything different it really feels like you have to go through a LOT of clicking, something I don't feel when I look at the homepage of Webtoon.

So... not a full win for Webtoon, but not a full win for Tapas either. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I thought that was just my phone being weird. :joy: Whenever I click on a webtoons link in this forum I never actually get to the comic, just the front page lol

I’ve tried both, and the one of the main differences between them that I’ve noticed (fin terms of uploading) is what kind of comic you’re making. Long, vertical comics are much better for Webtoon, because they don’t have a panel limit like tapas. Like for my comic, I had to split the episodes into two pieces to get it on to tapas.
I can’t say much in terms of engagement, but I did get more views on Webtoon.

I love Both Tapas and Webtoon~ <3 Regarding on supporting I love tapas, On views, I like webtoon~ They're both good platform~

I use both. I prefer Tapas because of the reader metrics, creator benefits, and community/forum.

I'm on both Tapas and Webtoon, and thus far I'm leaning strongly toward Tapas. I'm a fairly new creator, having only started posting on April 10th, so I don't have much of a following yet on either platform, but SO FAR, my engagement on Tapas is more than double what it is on Webtoon. I have 18 followers on Tapas, and 8 on Webtoon. I have several dozen comments (all of which I was alerted to!) on Tapas. I have 1 comment on Webtoon (which I had to go and find).

More than anything, though... I'm concerned about getting censored/deleted on Webtoon. I've heard some of the ridiculous things people get No-No swatted for, and I'm looking ahead in my storyline and cringing a little. My characters swear sometimes. And there are medieval fight scenes. There's blood. Nothing excessively gory, but... killing someone with a sword isn't clean, yo. I don't have any sexy scenes planned, so I doubt that'll be an issue, but... yeah. Basically, if my story gets Noped on Webtoon, I may just not come back. Their bigger audience won't do me any good if I can't post my pages in the first place. XD

As a creator, I pretty strongly prefer Tapas. It has overall nicer creator features, status, and my comics seem to perform better here.

As a reader, I actually prefer Webtoons in some ways. It's not a big difference, but some things like the bookmark feature is nice while reading long episodes, and the like. I don't have a strong preference either way though.

I upload to both as a creator, and I think they have different strengths. Tapas is so much better for interacting with other people. Here I actually feel like I can connect with readers and other creators. On webtoons i feel guilty over not interacting with readers, should you even respond when there’s no notifications, I’m not sure? But on the other hand there’s more people on webtoons. Kinda feel like I’m repeating what other people already said though

I prefer Tapas on all fronts! I prefer the tools as a creator, I prefer how comments work, I prefer how the site looks, I especially prefer how the staff communicates, and I prefer how it doesn't totally garble my images. (Plus, they're nicer about horny content which is a plus.)

Webtoons is over saturated, highly censored, and the commenters can be extremely flippant or just kind of ignore that I'm a real human is making the comic they're reading, not just some big team. And, imo, Webtoons does a lot to suppress it's community made which always feels bad.

That all said, if you're making comics and you want an audience, right now you don't really have a choice. Use any and all platforms and see what sticks. Try Comicfury too if you want something more old school and way less censored than both platforms.

Just curious where this info comes from? Webtoons has coins you pay for and then use to unlock certain episodes, just like how Tapas has ink to do that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I double checked by Googling around and found several pages where I could buy coins on Webtoons and unlock episodes.

The episodes you can unlock on Webtoon are "fast pass" for ongoing series, so you can read them for free if you just wait a couple weeks.

Oh, I see. So it's slightly different but still technically paid for content, gotcha.

Tapas is better for me as a reader. The library system is very lacking, but I like just about everything else. Webtoon has pretty good UI and presentation too, but it's just sort of lacking in some places. Maybe I'm just not familiar with the place, I don't know.

Yup, what @migxmeg said, basically  Webtoon makes you pay for early access, but if you don't want to, you can still read their premium series for free, you just have to wait a little longer... unlike Tapas, where quite a bunch of premium series appear to be permanently locked behind paywalls (save maybe for a few discounts/free gift episodes).

Hmmm I'm kinda 50/50? I'm more biased towards Webtoon just because I've connected to a lot more creators on there. On the other hand tho I think it's easier to interact with comments on Tapas.

As someone who makes funny comics nsfw borderline, Tapas is the go for me.
They deleted a chapter where some breasts were showing (nipples were not even drawn), i don't have the time/energy to censor every single patch of skin in panels, or worry about if a chapter gets censored.
In Tapas, if there's something sexual i just add the mature label and be done with it.

Here in Spain there were magazines in the 70s and 80s with covers and content you'd be sent to jail nowadays.

Mobile apps are a cancer to creativity, welcome to 2021, where censorship is harder than 50 years ago.
So, Tapas.

I cross-post to webtoon, but I prefer tapas. As a reader I could never figure out webtoon and when an episode updates (and like. that THAT is hard... there's a problem lol) and as a creator I do really appreciate that Tapas has this forum for connecting with other creators <3

Initially I wanted to post on Webtoon since that's the app I used as a reader. Then I decided to start posting on Tapas first and see how that went, and... I absolutely fell in love with the community here. It's really friendly and makes it easy for a newcomer like me to interact with other artists. So, for now, as a creator I'd say Tapas but I intend to post on Webtoon as well eventually.

12 days later

When i was still making comics, i def preferred webtoons.

Because it was the only place on the internet i could get more than 2 digit views (tapas, deviantart, instagram, etc always gave me low results).

But in the end, i feel my stuff was never that good, as i could never make ad revenue anywhere.

I don't push my tapas post so much., So far I've always had a better response on Webtoon, so I gravitated there. I've since started a shift back to regular updates on Tapas, so we shall see?
Also I don't like when Tapas yells at you in red when your analytics drop by 0.1 in the space of a day... it's very discouraging. It's like having your teacher mark red on your test and being like:
Tapas: NO, DO IT AGAIN!
Me: ...but it was 0.1% and it was a da-
Tapas: YOU FAILED, AGAIN!
