Dec 2021

This was my first upgrade from a very small Wacom Intuos and I truly love it but it does have a couple downsides - huge files with lots of layers bog down Clip Studio and there are times when I wish for a larger screen to draw on. I do appreciate that I'm used to this screen size though so when I take it on travel or out of the house it doesn't feel crammed. About to run out of storage but that's me and my bad file hygiene - I'll be doing a massive backup to OneDrive after the holidays.

Never tried iPad Air but would not want to be cutting back on the processor.

Also I work this thing to death and I've had it since 2018... that's pretty amazing :+1:

Simpler one today.

@nathanKmcwilliams ah noooo the little smudge - those inks are looking otherwise really flowly and clean recently and damn they look so great together.

@MerrowBros WHOA! Glad to see that you stuck with the sandals for Jim :heart_eyes:. I feel like your character on the right from today (last night?) is horrified by something I did, sorry!!

@Mallory drawing on a white background hurts my eyes :D. Leonie is tooooo adorable, love her already - look at those little shoes!! Supporting cast looking great too, definitely interested in reading about these guys.

@IndigoShirtProd that design came out amazing and was super cool seeing the thought process sketches - thanks for sharing both!!

@rumpenstiltzkin Only want him to be happy... but can't help love seeing him angry XD.

@DanielRKM oh yes I'm going to add them - they're so derpy. Your turnarounds are looking great - putting in the work! :raised_hands: My favorite though is how much you get across just with Penny's eyebrows in your expression studies of course.

@migxmeg
Thanks. Eventually I'd like to be able to sell some of these, so my inking game needs to go up a bit. I still have some tools I need to get, like fineliners for hatching lines, white pens for details on black, and some of that real thin tape to cover up mistakes like those smudges.

@Legendofgenii I drew on am iPad for a while and still use it to brainstorm/sketch. I have an older mini and honestly aside from the screen being too small, I never had issues with Procreate despite the processor not being top of the line, which I would highly recommend. IMO unless your plan is to draw movie posters on 200 layers, the processor in the Air should be fine.

I will say though that I dislike the feeling of the Apple pencil on an iPad screen. The pressure sensitivity on the Pencil is great but the feel itself feels like drawing with really hard charcoal on a single layer of the crappy newsprint you use to do studies in college and it just gives me the heebie-jeebies, even with a textured screen protector.

@migxmeg High five for not using white backgrounds. It used to make my migraines really bad, and now I don't have migraines as often but it's still like, why gift yourself eyestrain when you can just... not? The only downside is picking colors, hah.

I know it is to @Legendofgenii but just wanted to add that for drawing comics like I use the ipad/procreate for I struggle with the layers I am limited with the amount of layers I get with an older ipad. The larger canvas you want to draw on the less layers you get - for exampel I draw mainly in A4 size and only get 57 layers, most of the times Im fine but its still limiting - esp if my pages are background heavy. Thats why I hope to get a newer one someday, youll get more increased layers with the new ones :sparkles:

And I want to mention that the feel of the apple pencil is highly individual ofc, I do not think it feels like painted here :laughing: i dont use a screen protector either and think the pen works nicely and smooth.

But best is ofc if you get the chance to go to a store where you can test it :slight_smile:

@Mallory @migxmeg @rumpenstiltzkin @DanielRKM

Thanks for this everyone! :grin:

I had a go at a friends house once, but just a quick squiggle as I don’t like drawing when people are watching.

I think I’d use it for sketches, which I’d then transfer to photoshop and ink on my computer.

Main reason is just to draw (digitally) while snuggled up in front of the telly. Lol!

@stiatent
So I have only used Magma once, for a total of 15 minutes. Now apparently, I...couldn't find the December artboard :cry_02:

Please forgive my technologically inept brain as I sketched Clara in another program. :sweat_02: I'm sorry.

@wispysing Lol see if this URL works https://app.magmastudio.io/z1m4x99ri_1
and the code they said is 64768382

also here's a screen cap of where to go incase Url above fails, it's under Announcements Tab:

Yay! Love it my friend! :smiley: :dancers:
Forgiven XD It looks super awesome, awesome linework! :thumbsup:
Our collab makes me even more excited to work on this :beers:
You coloring yours? Lemme know what colors so I'll see if I can compliment Clara's.

@migxmeg did mention they added a paste-in function to Magma,
not sure if they left it for December Magma Board so maybe it might work for your Clara drawing.

I shifted Evan 's sketch to the left, with a slight left tilt, hopefully Clara has more space for her antlers now. :christmas_tree: I'll redraw his left arm so he can rest it on Clara's shoulder when you paste it in yours.

Here's the updated version, if you need for testing:

For his right hand will probably add a small guitar like instrument Cuatro or Ukulele for some christmas tunes :guitar:

EVERYONE!
There's lots of space next to where @wispysing 's character is going to be incase anyone has an idea to interact with our characters :smiley: (see @wispysing 's post above mines for reference)

@aqua03 here's your five stars for 1000% Originality XD

Ah no wonder I wasn't able to find it, I have yet to join the Discord server. :joy: Thank you for the info. I might color mine in another program and import the finished piece altogether to Magma. Excited to see your finished piece too!

Her palette, for reference:

Summary

@LCT_m_a_d Thank you! Rough sketch and inking are undoubtedly my favorite parts of the process.

Thanks! Penny's expressions are a lot of fun to make. It was so hard drawing her neutral in the turnarounds (as I was getting strong Chris Pine/Jay Leno vibes (I've adjusted them since, but DANG did she have Cris Pine's eyes/brows for a while), so the expression sheet reassured me it was worth putting in that neutral work and that we can indeed get some good character out of her! :sweat_02:

Lmao now I feel like I failed, not giving him a hat/eyepatch XD

Well, now you know what you need to do for your next drawing then! XD
