Things that hurt your art?

Hands will always haunt me. Faces I can do in one sitting, hair, outfits, etc. But then I have to do something with fingers and shit. AND IT TAKES FOREVER!

Ughhh same. Hands don't take me forever but because they either end up looking decent or they end up looking like complete shit. Sometimes the fingers are all the same length, sometimes they're too small (hands should cover your face, so therefore they'd be about that big) and sometimes they're both!

Don't even get me started on toes... Because I don't know how to draw toes.

Probably hands... and probably the lack of reference image most of the time; usually my reference image is the last page that character showed up. XD

Sometimes my Sketches are too simple. Then for the lineart I ballpark the anatomy based on those and it just ends up looking wrong.

Drawing with a mouse... can't have variations in line thickness so it'll never look natural.

I still do the sketches with pencil and paper and scan it. However I can't get into using a web-tablet even though I have one.

Just don't like how it feels. Feelsbadman.

Mental health is my biggest obstacle right now, but I'm taking steps.

Other issues...

Too many ideas, not enough time or focus.
Trouble prioritizing my studies and projects. I know there are a lot of things I need to work on. I never know where to concentrate first though, so my approach is rather scattered, and I think that slows down my progression a great deal.

Short attention span and interruptions for me. If a character in a recent page is missing an ear or part of the flats, it's because I just happened to get up for something urgent(or robocalls), got back and forgot what I was doing and never got back to it; and then if I leave for something tiring or take a nap, I take SO long to get back into it because everything else is more enticing.

I struggle with the traditional vs digital look. I draw my comic traditionally on paper using pens and pencils and add color and lineart digitally. Sometimes I do very heavy lineart that completely hides the pen marks underneath, sometimes I barely do any digital lineart at all. I love the latter look way more but sometimes feel that it looks wrong or that I should be really imitating the clean digital look. It's why my comic doesn't have a unified appearamce, which also gives me stress!

Listening to music that doesn't match the mood of a comic. Podcasts are also tend to be distracting, for me anyway. Also a very very short attention span and mental health.

I really need to use photo reference more. I try to do crazy interesting poses but it I end up redrawing it many times because the anatomy is off or a weapon looks like a toy. Every time I look up photo ref it comes out better so you'd think that'd be the first thing I do, but nope.

Same here! I can't sit and do one thing for more than a few hours whether I like the task or not. If I could my comic probably been done by now

My problem is procrastination and over reliance on digital corrections.

When I started doing traditional art again, I realized that I'm not as slow at drawing as a thought. Since real life has no undos, when I ink and color, I have one chance at a stroke and that it. If I screw up I just improvise. On the computer I have multiple tries at making lines which might be what slows me down 'cause I gotta keep fixing it(the stabilizer in csp isn't that great even at max). On the ipad it's a lil better since I'm drawing directly on the canvas, but it's not much.

Although, digital inking has made traditional inking a lot better that it was before

Oh, I did not think of that because I'm so used to deal with it: another thing that hurts my art is the crazy amount of hand-related stimming behaviours I'm experiencing.
But it has considerably diminished since I bought a display tablet as the differences of temperature on the surface bring me the same calming benefits as stimming (go figure!).

Often, I won't even realize that something was really hurting the comic until I stumble across a better way to do it. That's always a good feeling, though it generally means the comic takes longer to make, haha. Quality is quite time consuming.

The line art does take the longest, because each line needs to have a proper curve and weight to it, since I've opted for smooth, closed line work. But I'd say right now I need to work on being less precise with the background painting and not being afraid to get a little messy to capture the mood of the scenery and not just a reasonable likeness of it.

Trying to work too fast.
My best drawings are reworkings of multiple iterations, reworks and meditations. The satisfaction of completing something can sometimes get in the way of the reason for doing it.
