The Webtoon vertical format is my personal favourite format for reading comics, but I've noticed that some comics don't fully take advantage of the benefits? (Obviously, there's nothing wrong with that--it's their comic and they're free to do whatever they want with it--I just want to make that clear).
Different comic formats have different benefits, but a lot of comics are illustrated in a way that it would make no difference if they switched formats because there's nothing about it that is using the unique benefits of that specific format (whether that be vertical webtoon, traditional comics or something else). There are people who do this for reasons like having the opportunity to print their comic, while still having a version that can be read the same on mobile, but for people making webtoons that they have no plan of printing, I kinda wish they took advantage of the webtoon format a bit more?
I don't think I'm really explaining my point very well lmao. And I think I'm coming off as a bit rude and criticising the artists, but I dont mean it that way lol
Anyway, here are some examples of art that I think really used the format well:
This panel from
Deor (episode 3) uses a cool perspective, like a vertical panorama, that wouldn't have near the same effect if it was put into traditional format. (It doesn't look as good when its zoomed out like this, but check it out on mobile on webtoons!!).
The prologue episode of Siren's Lament uses the format well by making everything flow together, so you can't stop scrolling until you reach the end. (I can't put the images here because its too much, but go check it out on webtoons).
For general things instead of specific panels, I love that a lot of webtoons incorporate sound effects and music, which obviously isn't possible with traditional printed comic books. And I love the double page spreads in comics and manga, which is can't be done in vertical webtoons.
What are some examples of panels/pages of webtoons or traditional style comics that you think take full advantage of the benefits of that format?
