I'd imagine part of it is also for contact/payment details. Like if they were to bill you and stuff, they'd at least need your real full name since they're technically paying you a salary (if you get featured). Also as far as I know, they don't really post what you look like to others right off the bat. At least, they haven't done that to the past winners so...
They, won't force you to show your face. It's just that you might get invited to stuff where you could show up or they want to show your photo to promote panels you take part in etc. While Shen did show up at a con baring his face, he also did this video on Line Webtoons official youtube channel.
But of course I can understand and respect if you don't want to comply to all of this. The decision is up to you.
I'd also like to see who entered the contest. It was possible in the past afterall. They probably have their reasons.
After a huge tug of war on my mind and after I've seen a dozen of entries, I decided to just spectate and analyze how this contest will conclude to prepare for the next one. For now, I should be focusing on my current one (not a contest entry) while lots of people are on hiatuses and such. It's not that I'm scared to lose but I still think I really have a lot to learn and experience and I want to make my dream project when I've achieved that level.
Goodluck to you guys who do join!
If you treat the comic as a professional proposal entry for a job (because winning means working for LW), then usually extra unrelated things would be deemed unprofessional. But if this is a race for subs and interactions, then I guess a lot of methods could be counted as marketing skill (?).
I hope this won't be just a downvote senseless hell again. Honestly I'm in just because it's fun to join with creator friends, talk about it and release the ideas we put aside until now.
Toxic behaviours for competition aren't new. But I still hope for a fun event instead of a bloody salty death match between creators.
I completely agree with Laht on this one.
I am also joining just for the fun (and maybe a bit exposure if I am honest). Winning is nice but not something I seriously anticipate.
The whole downvoting thing is a bit irritating but I believe this is probably just a very small portion of people who want to mess with creators, so what I do is go around throwing 10 Stars at smaller comics who I think deserve some love. Probably just as stupid but whatever xD
One thing that is bugging me since the contest was announced was the judgment criteria. A huge portion of the judgement is actually done via readers engagement (40%). And while it is reasonable for a company to pick a title that is like by the audience to feature. It sure makes this contest more into a popularity contest than a search for the best comic. How are smaller or new comic creators able to compete with already established creators in the community?
Anther question I have is: How far can I go with promotion? I know this sounds stupid but I feel like if I were to promote my new comic at the end of my other one which has quite a lot of subscribers I would create an unfair advantage for myself. I've seen a lot of creators do that already and while I think it's reasonable I just want to keep this contest as fair as possible. I probably will promote my new comic with my next update because, and I am just being honest here, I want people to read it, but It still feels wrong in consideration of the creators who don't already have a reader base.
If I remember correctly, the official rules stated something regarding creating unfair advantage but I can't find that part anymore, so I might just be making things up, haha
I dunno, Am I the only one who is worried by this?
i am also very intimidated by the atmosphere on webtoon and initially want to publish as a regular there but when i check the site there's a contest going on and i'm having a hard time deciding whether i would like to join as well, since i know this is my first time posting there and i'm scared for the reaction not only because i'm terribly new at this also what might coming from the passionate readers who already have preferred webtoons and want it to win, therefore the downvote or the bad reviews. i mean i need time to prepare my mental self for this ;;w;;
I know there's the drama with downvote waves and everything happening with the contest, but I can't help but be super excited after reading some of the entries (thanks for adding a tab webtoon!).
Wow. Just wow. I'll be a participant in the contest, but I can't help but be hyped for other people's entries. These introductory panels are establishing mood and flow on such a professional level. It really got me motivated to be reworking mine
So many noteworthy comics already, and we're only on day 14.
I've seen many creators on social media planning to launch in July. The competition will just get fiercer and more intense by then.
I have bets among each category, but you just never know which ones Webtoons will choose.
The 40% reader engagement is such a huge chunk and hurts the small creators. Maybe 10% of reader engagement will be more appropriate to encourage unknown creators to join. But it is what it is.
It will end up as a popularity contest.
