Hey, I'm working on a thing, it doesn't have a title yet because I'm procrastinating that part. Just...which would you click on and read:

  • Chiaroscuro
  • The Shapeshifter's Wife
  • A Necromancer's Marriage
  • History's Handwriting
  • Necromancer (and romancer is highlighted in a different color lol)
  • Erasing You (which might actually be taken already--I should check for that)
  • I'm Married to a Hot Monster Shapeshifter!?

These are all for the same story, PS, all under Fantasy/Romance (although it's mostly a fantasy comic that dives deep into it's own lore, it's an isekai/monster romance) but like...there's a lot of things that happen in this story, and I don't know which to reveal in the title. Probably just romance, since it's...trendy right now...I just don't want to lead people into thinking this is following all the trappings of the romance drama, this is a dark romance, although it ends HEA.

Chiaroscuro immediately caught my eye so I voted for that one considering I'd most likely see it quicker as well when I browse comic/novel sections

between Necromancer and shapeshifter's wife. I actually tend to look more at covers though instead of titles and also the descriptions.

I'm baffled as to why you left "Erasing You" if you thought it might've already been taken.. History's Handwriting just sounds like a documentary on penmanship, and Necromancer with the emphasis on -romancer is still just Necromancer, which is a lazy title that might already be taken as well tbh. So you're left with these titles mostly having an obvious nod to the marriage part of your story, which as you said.. It's trendy. But relying on trends like that to add appeal to your story is short-sighted imo you won't know down the line if you'll wanna change it to something more fitting of the story or not.

That first one is the only one going out of its way to make a reader go "what's that title mean?? Maybe I should read that to find out.." Not only that, but it sounds cool too so like.. you had a poll but there's really one option to go with here lol

Consider tone and searchability.
While Chiaroscuro is the most literary of the titles, it's also an art term and might muddle searches on google with fine art related media.

Aside from that I like Necromancer, but I would maybe offset it with a hyphen or capital to show the play on words, so maybe NecRomancer or Nec-romancer. Still, it's kind of punchy, reminds me of anime, might pick it if the tone of the story is faster and if you want a more general audience.

My third pick would be The Shapeshifter's Wife. Sounds literary, but I expect more of a focus on her character.

It's hard to say because I don't know what your story is about.

I think Necromancer would be good if it is rewritten like...
(Nec)romancer
Nec/Romancer
-Nec-Romancer

I think the weakest one is "History's Handwriting". It's just really bland. Unless your character's name is History and they are writing, I would stay clear of it.
I would also avoid "I'm Married to a Hot Monster Shapeshifter!?". It sounds like a bad exploitation film from the 70s. It is also too long. I think a better version of it would be "Monster Spouse".

These are all actually really interesting observations. This is like...mostly useful just because it gives me a good idea of what you guys thought when you saw the titles. Thanks for all of the good input so far!

Really interesting that so many people went for Chiaroscuro. Wasn't expecting that, since it was my original title that I've been wanting to use but like...ehh....no one can spell it....

Honestly...

I'm married to a hot monster shapeshifter might get you the views, but it also kinda makes me want to blanche. XD Personally, I like either A Necromancer's Marriage or the Shapeshifter's Wife. I dunno why, but The Shapeshifter's Wife is really speaking to me. Maybe because it sounds like a classic novel or something? I dunno, it just sounds classy. <3 Go with your gut if needed! Your gut is usually right~!

@ratscout There was the book the Time Traveler's Wife like several years back that got really popular (which wasn't bad. Never saw the movie but the book was interesting). So maybe you're reminded by that?
