I remember a period when like 80% of the comics I was currently following joined Hiveworks.
omg Snafu comics back in like 2008?? I used to read PPG and Grim tales as well as a Naruto doujin1 about the kids of the main naruto characters which where original characters (this was way before the new boruto manga), they where pretty good and creative characters too but the comic stopped updating in like 2011 i think.
When I saw this topic I went back to check snafu and some comics are still actively updating? which i really didn't expect, like the PPG comic is still ongoing?
I also used to read Penny&Aggie and I loved the final 
I am a fan of Gisele Lagacé since them. I read Menage a 31 and their partners series nowadays.
I also used to read Girls with Slingshots1 from Danielle Corsetto which is also one of the authors from Boo! It's sex1 from webtoons,
Oh yo, Bite Me! was one of the first comics on this site that I fell in love with. Still follow it closely on Webtoons, it's really a crazy refreshing vampire narrative, yeah?
One of my very first webcomics reads was toothpastefordinner.com2 which has updated every single day since it started, never missed an update. It bats around a lot more with being humourous and political lately, so I just follow it casually now.
I also used to read a really popular smash brothers fancomic series... Wow, I don't remember the artist's name... Kate, I think? It was cute and silly especially during the Dojo updates, heh. Rad, absurd lil translation of the game and its character roster.
So, my introduction to "webcomics" was the biggest German website hosting Mangas (looking back, a lot of them were just webcomics...) I didn´t find the really good ones, I think my account got deleted because of inactivity; but here are two I used to read:

They had some really good ones there, some of them sadly never translated...but I think the website is slowly becoming emptier after some outside changes. Maybe manga isn´t as popular as it was growing up anymore?

One of the very first webcomics I recall reading was on Smackjeeves. It's a hidden series now, since Smackjeeves updated and if you don't have a cover you're automatically hidden, but I'm lucky and have it on my favorites. So I can still see it!
And there was another one that I can't seem to recall the name of. It was about two eleven year old boys living in a castle...it felt old even when I was reading it a few years ago. I wish I could remember what it was called, cause THAT was actually the first one I read....Oh well.
I remember following one, I TOTALLY forgot the name of it though.
But after a while I stopped reading because it was a hassle going to its site and trying to remember what happened before the latest update.
I'm one of those lazy bastards who appreciates aggregate sites like Tap.
I remember Animexx. I left that page in 2013 because of the ongoing weblog bullying and admins sitting on their hands about it because ‘if you post stuff online you have to be aware that people might be mean to you’. I didn't fall victim to it but sure was not willing to hang around until someone tears my work apart in their blog 
Anyway, I thought of returning a few times...but I guess it’s not worth the hassle

I have the memory of a goldfish and hardly remember the webcomics I was into.
But since Animexx was mentioned, back then I was really into ‘High Angle’1 by Yaa (the person who also does ‘crushed’
I don’t think it was ever translated into English tho. 
Good thing I apparently missed the bullying...probably just didn´t notice it cause I was so young and new to the internet back then haha ^^´
And I totally remember that Comic, wasn´t it a bit of a shonen parody? Really good, though, and on point!

I used to read lots of comics on smackjeeves way back when. Unfortunately I can't quite remember any specific titles at the moment...
But I do know I was a big fan of Romantically Apocalyptic for a good while!
Well, I used to read Megatokyo. It's still on-going I think, but the plot (from what I heard) has become kind of convoluted. lol I used to love it back in mid-2000s but I stopped reading it for years now.
I also loved Alternate and Todd Allison & the Petunia Violet but the author has gone awol and never came back to their western audience, due to some disappointing issues regarding their kickstarter and personal life. Too bad.
Anyway, there were quite a few comics I liked on smackjeeves. I still have an account there, and I think only 2 comics from my list are still updating there.
I went on Snafu comics a lot. The PPG one was my gateway there. Someone translated first few chapters (asking the author of course) on some anime related site and I wanted to know where's more of this.
I remember going on Smackjeeves and reading some comic about Disney's "Little Mermaid", but all the characters were guys.
There's also "Olympus Overdrive". I loved everything about it, but now it's on permament hiatus. 
I think maybe you're thinking of a different Bite Me because the one I used to read was never posted on Tapas or Webtoons? The one I used to read was about the French revolution and vampires, which was very refreshing too I think. I'm a sucker for a good vampire story but they're hard to find in this post-Twilight world. (Curse you, Stephanie Meyer!)
I remember one of the first ones I really got into in the early 2000s was A Lesson is Learned But the Damage is Irreversible. It was about the creators' dreams, they were really trippy and the art was beautiful.

Another one that I read ages ago is The Boy Who Fell (formerly Hell's Kitchen). I rediscovered it this year and now make sure to read it weekly. It's far from finished though. : D

Back in middle school I used to like So your a Cartoonist(SYAC) and Mario Adventures: Playtime's Over
But SYAC is generally hated (I have no idea why the artist made himself a blue bear) and Mario Adventures ended a few years ago. I would share that with my friends we thought it was absolutely hilarious.
