What do people like about your comic?

What do people like about your comic? What specific things have you gotten complimented about?

Are they the same things you put the most effort/passion into? Or is there a discrepancy between what people like VS what you care about the most?

For my comic Heart of Keol, people have mentioned:

• Colorful painterly art

• The setting. Thanks to anime/manga, there's a plethora of Asian fantasy with ancient Japan-like aesthetics, and I think people find it refreshing that I have an ancient Asia-like setting that's based on a different country (Korea).

• The worldbuilding. ???????!? This I don't get. I don't see what's so special about my worldbuilding? This appears to be separate (though possibly related) from the semi-unusual setting, since I got comments about the worldbuilding on Korean sites too, back when I was posting there. And users on those Korean sites have seen lots of comics with ancient Korean fantasy setting.

• SHINY THINGS! GLOWING THINGS! SHINING TOILETS!

Unfortunately, none of those overlap with the focus of my effort/passion with this particular project. I mean, I obviously care about those aspects, but not to the same degree I care about the characters or the central theme. Though maybe that's simply because you need time to learn about those things in a story...? especially this story, as it's very much a slow burn? I wish there was a way for me to gauge how I'm doing, and figure out how to do better, but I digress.

I guess the last one (shiny things) does overlap a bit with what fascinates me about art/sights in general: the property, behavior and effects of light.

For Inhibit people have mentioned that they like how I draw expressions and how the dialogue sounds natural and real, which is great because I love drawing goofy expressions and I love natural, flowing dialogue!

I've gotten a ton of compliments for art, such as just the general style or expressions, for my comic. Which I'm glad for, because I like the art improvement in my comic.
I think the most confusing compliment for me is those who say they really like the story/writing, since I feel like the writing itself is bad <_>;;

meanwhile the best compliment I've gotten was someone telling me all my characters were jerks, but still extremely likeable HAHA.

As a reader of HoK, I'd say don't worry! Comments are often sporadic reactions to what jumps out the most or what you notice first, and the art and that glowing toilet are definitely eye-catching. Character development, as well as discovering and experiencing the theme of the story, takes time and is also a much more subconscious thing. I believe the average "non-creator" reader experiences those aspects more in the shape of an attachment to or emotional investment in the characters. A fellow creator/writer might notice or pay attention to it more, but even then it's probably not something you'd comment on every episode, like you might with, say, glowing paws. Instead they'll comment on it at turning points where the character development/theme is the most intense, be it in the shape of "I love the character development" or "NOO my precious cinnamon roll!! ;;__;;".

I've had people tell me they liked my comics, but so far no one was able to tell me what they like about them D;

Well, my comic have few followers, but some of them said me for example that the art is good and fits well with the story, and that the characters are cute and interesting. That compliments makes me happy (One of them said he/she liked the way I draw hands XDD)
But I think that the most awesome compliment is when one of them said that he/she 'were so drawn' into the story. MAN, that feels good. And some of them said that the message of the story is beautiful. And that was my goal doing this. That moment is gold for me ^-^

Most of the positive comments I get are about the story and characters, and how well developed they are.

I've also gotten a lot of 'thank you for creating a character like this' type comments for some of my characters, mostly for Hannah, Osiris, Andrew's Dad, and Lorelei's parents.

I get a lot of 'thank you for saying this' 'This is a powerful moment for me' in concerns to dialogue and story.

Art wise a get a lot of complements on how clean my lineart is, and how noticeable my improvement is (which is nice considering how bad the series started because I was fighting with arthritis when starting it) They like how I draw expressions, and how the layout though simple is really easy to read.

A lot of people happy that it's a daily update comic.

Lots of comment on 'The feels' and how they can't wait for me to rip their hearts out.

I got mostly tiny compliments but nothing in depth on here at all.

Meanwhile while I posted to my other site people really loved the characters, wanted to know a lot more about them and enjoyed reading about them. Enjoyed my art a lot. I'm hoping i'll get the same response.

The visuals. Colour, detail, stuff like that. Sometimes my main character.

My story, setting, and characters are all pretty mediocre. I mean, I put a lot of effort into all of those things, but not as much as someone who actually writes and does everything on a "professional" level so I don't expect much. It is nice that people do like the visuals, though. The pages take days to finish.

Also my comic is only 20 pages in, so yeah. Lmao!

People like some of the characters, especially the main. I think the art appeals to some people, but it's not very flashy. I think some people like the writing, because I've heard that, but the story is so hardly started...
People also like the historical accuracy I try to maintain. I'm glad because that part is so hard. Sometimes there's glaring inaccuracy but it plays into people's nostalgia so I get away with it.
... Also there's some poems in the comic and surprisingly they're sometimes met with enjoyment.
There used to be a lot of people who thought I was making a BL and liked to see boys kissing most of all but now after pages and pages of vomit and no romance I think they're over it.

For Goblins of Razard, I've gotten a lot of comments about how modest the female characters are and that they kick butt. Several parents said that they liked that it was a somewhat intricate story that was still appropriate for a younger audience. (It's really rated 13+ for some mild violence/language) None of those things were my intention, but it makes me happy. I do get compliments on the art and especially as I get better, people notice me leveling up on backgrounds and details. Those are things I actively work on and I totally love it that folks notice and say such nice things. <3

Okay, but seriously, I really have gotten the most compliments on the fact that Daniel is a more scary vampire story that doesn't try to sugarcoat things, and everyone seems fond of all the characters (or at least they find them all interesting), especially Daniel himself just for being so unnerving. =P Many like my choice of time period, too.

Most people seem to like my art style, but I get a lot of love for the grayscale coloring especially, and how I draw expressions and.....ye ol' blood and guts. XP

For my comic Soul Ascendance it's usually compliments about the art and character design xD people seem to like my foreshadowing and the story too, but I the artwork definitely gets the most compliments.

I've gotten a number of comments on the art in Evil Witch Allie, but I'm still surprised every time it happens. Basically every aesthetic decision in that comic was maid to save drawing time, and frankly a lot of the pages ended up looking rushed anyway. Bedtime Stories For Strangers tends to get more compliments on the writing, but I guess that makes sense since it's easier to judge a story once you've read it all the way through.

I tend to get more out of readers' in the moment reactions (even negative ones) to what's happening in in the story than I get out of vague praise for the series overall.(Although, both super gratifying and deeply appreciated!) The former usually means the reader is really emotionally engaged with the comic, while the latter may just mean they like the general idea of it.

My more complex backgrounds, most often, and I'm glad because they take forever.

I also get a few observations on character motivations, behaviour and so on, which I also enjoy getting, but they make me nervous as well. I'm more confident my backgrounds can live up to people's expectations than my writing.

The one thing that everybody who's either read and/or reviewed my comic Life of an Aspie has complimented me on has been how well I've portrayed Susan's asperger's up to now. Being an aspie myself, that I think helped a lot in making Susan's case believable.

-Funny. I don't really find it that funny tho.
-"I like the art style". This one I am OK with...Tho it is hard to really pin point what my inspiration was...it was sort of based on me trying to make a generic "American cartoon" style.
-"Nice shading". I don't think my shading is anything special but I do think it helps mask my messy line work as well as make the characters "pop".

The weirdest one...
-"I want you to draw [character] nude." HAHAHAHA....maybe one day.

For my comic, Oni x Fox, people have mentioned enjoying the zany expressions I draw, and how I am able to push the facial emotions very far despite all the characters wearing masks.

The dialogue, characters, and character designs people have complimented as well. All of these have made me very happy as these are all things I have a lot of passion for My works are often very character-driven and hearing from others that I'm able to bring so much life to them is awesome!
