Hi, everyone!

I am in the process of designing and building a site for my comic and I was wondering what design choices would be smart for such a use case. For my comic, my audience is built from 8 different places so I feel like a central hub would be beneficial as a supplement and for organization purposes.

While I know how to build a site generally, I'm having a bit of trouble determining how exactly to structure it.

In my opinion, a good webcomic site should have:

  • The comics on the homepage.
  • A homepage sidebar with some basic information on the comic as well as links to a store and Patreon
  • Comic pagination
  • Comments (through Disqus or Facebook, preferrably)
  • Social links in the footer
  • Archive, search, and RSS functions
  • Responsive stylesheets, of course (mobile-friendly)
  • An about page

...but that feels like it's only the obvious stuff and I suspect that I'm missing some details.

So, I'd like to know your opinions too!

What do you look for in a good webcomic website? What are some features you enjoy? What are some features you dislike? Do you have any examples (it can even be your own)?

Thanks!

I feel like all of the above covers the bases but I'm also aware that some will include a cast page with basic bios for characters that have already been introduced and sometimes a bonus content section

that aside i can't really think of much else

A tagging system for your comic pages. Sometimes I go back to look for a specific page but can't sift through all of it, tags would make a task like that easier.

It's a little thing but it's one I've found that I like in a webcomic site: clicking on the comic itself takes you to the next comic, not just having to find the "next" button. It's pretty nice if I ever go back to an old webcomic and re-read it. I guess the "swipe up to read next episode" thing that Tapas and Webtoon have is somewhat similar.

Also I like comic creators that would put extra jokes in the mouse-over pop-up. Probably doesn't work nowadays with mobile and touchscreens and whatnot but I'm old school like that... Geez, my ideas for what makes a good website really are trapped in the early 2000's...

That's a good point!

Ah yes, that's a good one. A little harder to implement from scratch I think but it's definitely useful.

I have seen those features on some standalone sites and I like them too! I am pretty sure a lot of ComicFury sites still have those functions.

I am not good at multireplies, sorry.
