What "genre" is your webcomic?

Final Light is a fantasy, comedy, action, romance and adventures comic, but with what I plan it will be also drama, There might be Slice of life things but all in the context of this fantasy world.

I've got a (rather silly) murder mystery going on with Greyshire, and I seriously had a hard time picking a category for it! I ended up listing it as Comedy but it's really more a parody of/ tribute to classic mystery genre (you know, Agatha Christie type stuff.) It's also a bit different genre-wise because it's going to be interactive eventually (readers can question the suspects and examine evidence.)

Tough question. I think The Vapors could be either funny or sad, depending how you look at it. In the end I decided to call it a drama, since the humor isn't overt enough to really feel like a comedy.

Like, I found this exchange pretty funny. It's all about the character being disappointed and pissed off, but it's for such a petty thing and he's such a dick about it that it made me laugh. I think whether the reader laughs at him or feels bad for him will depend on how much they identify with him. Well... hopefully, if I've done my job.

So yeah... "drama..?"

I don't actually know what genre Stray Cats is in... I have it listed as a drama, I guess that's about right, but it does have a lot of action elements coming up. Seriously though, if someone wants to classify it for me, that would be terrific.

Fallacy is drama / fantasy with action surfacing time to time but mostly in future chapters. It could also be listed under mythology as it's very heavily inspired by Norse myths.

While I like reading stories from every genre, I enjoy most working with different kinds of fantasy stories. They are rarely something I'd classify purely fantasy but more of a mix of multiple genres, bits and pieces lifted from them to make one story. I have a future project that is mostly a mix of fantasy/adventure/ with sci-fi elements. There is also a journal comic I'm making which falls under slice of life / humor.

Bokushi is a comedy, mainly for kids (kodomo)

Slow & Quicky and Disfigurative Meaning are comedy too, but not only for Kids

Scarlet Black is a "battle seinen".

And Rearth is just seinen, with many drama and questioning

Kamikaze is kind of a bizarre mix. Most people say it's a superhero series at first glance, but once they read it 'superhero' is never mentioned again. As the creators behind it, we've always seen it as a sci-fi action drama. Readers also talk about it being a bit of political drama too, so there's that I guess. We've heard and used cyberpunk every now and then as well.

It's main genre is basically sci-fi. We like to have action in each episode with a heavy emphasis on character development and world building too. I wish I could make it easier and shorter to say, but that's honestly the best I got. xD

I would describe Tales from the Well as something of a modern fairytale. It's a creepy all-ages revival of stories like Grimm's fairytales and Hans Christian Anderson stories but with a fresh Coraline/Over the Garden Wall treatment on top of it =)

Glamour is a strange combo of horror/slice of life, shifting between being a normal comic focused on teens joking around and dealing with life to being filled with atmospheric horror, with surreal monsters and disturbing imagery.

I think I'd label There's No Such Thing as Jason -- I.T. as a dark drama if I could be super specific. It deals a lot with fixation and the main character is a bit of a masochist. But it's mainly just drama, that fits the bill pretty well.

I classify The Angel with Black Wings as a mixture of slice-of-life/drama/fantasy(the Angels part).

Runewriters is a fantasy story!

After reading wikipedia's definitions of various subgenres of fantasy I guess it'd most closely match Comic Fantasy, but I sort of tend to shy away from listing RW as a comedy. LIKE, I hope it makes you laugh! but I also hope you get attached to the characters and care about them, too.

As regards the linked article, I guess I've never really thought of genre as important for anything except for pitching? And even then it's not really a NECESSARY element of a pitch; not something you'd need to sort out when you're putting together a story idea. I dunno, how do you guys feel about that? Is it an important part of setting the tone of the story? If I were inspired by a particular genre I could see wanting to research the like...themes that make that genre work, but otherwise I feel like I'd work in the opposite direction; setting the tone that fit the story and then later finding the words to describe it.
