I've got 3 main characters in my novel right now, Mordecai, Achillea, and Aurelius. There will be two more in the future, but the story behind their names isn't as exciting.
My novel, Boneman, is a fantasy novel taking place in sort-of-medieval somewhere-in-Europe and it plays with Light Is Not Good/Dark Is Not Evil tropes. In most fantasy novels and RPGs, the main characters would be the bad guys.
Mordecai is a skeleton. His name sounds like "mortem", the Latin word for death.
Achillea is an orc werewolf. There's a bit of backstory around her name that I haven't gotten to yet, but without spoiling anything, it comes from Achillea Millefolium, the scientific name for the yarrow plant. The name comes from Achilles, who was taught how to use yarrow medicinally, and in flower language, yarrow can mean either healing or war.
Aurelius is an elf vampire. When I was young, I used to watch The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. To this day, it's still one of my favorite cartoons of all time and it inspired my love of ghouls, ghosts, and all things spooky. I might not have started writing Boneman if not for that show. Some of the most iconic moments in that show were accompanied by music performed by Aurelio Voltaire and I've always wanted to pay homage to the man who made one of my biggest inspirations great. Thus my vampire elf is named after a goth musician.
Every other name comes from name generator websites and forums.
