What Inspired Your Comic?

For Teach Me To Kill I guess it was my interest in serial killers, the psychology behind their acts, and especially my love for horror movies. Since kid I always liked bad guys and monsters and creepy things. So one day, while waiting in my car I doodled a young girl with roller skates, long blond hair, an heart shaped eyepatch and a driller and axe with a cute and innocent smile on her face. Then I thought, what if all this bad guys in movies like Friday 13, Halloween, etc. or even real ones like Zodiac, Jack the Ripper,.. went to a school to learn how to become serial killers, find their M.O. and such. But they are novice, young and clumsy, they're learning, so it will have funny moments, cute ones, relationships, envy, love. But also blood and dark humor like 2 of my fav. movies Tucked & Dale vs. Evil and What we do in the Shadows.

So I thought.
What if this innocent looking girl went there? And so, Q.Bee was born, and through her all the story for TMTK and other characters started taking shape and telling me the story of their lives (and deaths).

Halfsoul actually started out as a project during my first year in university where we had to kinda roleplay as a character and then do a photo shot of that character. So I kind of named my character Scarlet because that was the name I really wanted in junior high (since I don't like my actual name XD) and it kind of morphed into a story with other characters from there.
Other than that, just a lot of thinking, questioning life, and the way which people respond to mental illnesses...

"Dude, where's my heart?" is inspired by my life. I'm basically bare and bones inside still trying to find my purpose in life and why should I keep on living... Sounds sad eh? But no worries, I'm happy.

Well, my comic, Alansbeeville, is science fiction but It's one of my favorite genres. Apart from that I've just been fascinated with the idea of the surreal or fantastic being a mundane, everyday thing, so I came up with the idea of a world were the existence of aliens is common knowledge, most stories of alien encounters are true, but that doesn't surprise anyone as they go about their day to day existence. I'd also have to say that I was inspired by anime (despite the fact that my art doesn't look like that in the slightest) in that it can have a high concept premise while still putting focus on the characters and their struggles. The comic also takes some inspiration from my own life as I was going through an existential crisis, and I thought that would be a good emotional thrust for the story as some of the characters are just looking for their purpose in life. I can't go into more detail as I haven't gotten that far and it would probably count as spoilers if I did.

The story behind our comic is actually really ridiculous. So Maryam and I both write fiction and we both draw, and one day, I decided to draw one of her characters and gave it to her. She set the picture as the backdrop for her tablet, but the size and crop was weird, and it beheaded the poor OC. So I, being silly, told her that there was no beheading on my iPod's screen…that is unless you can behead space, because that's what my backdrop was.

We then wanted to figure out how it would be possible to behead space… and that eventually developed into our comic, Beheading Space.

I actually was a big fan of a German audio drama a few years ago and I always was into detective stories featuring the supernatural.
A friend of mine then started her own comic about mysterious murders being committed by a supernatural being and I was hooked.
"Welcome to Night Vale" made me interested in normalizing the monstrous and these were basically the ingredients for my own story.

For the short story I'm working on right now, it was to tackle a cliche my boyfriend and I passionately hate in manga. To see if we could try and make it work in a more reasonable/ less cringey way. I don't know if TV tropes already has a name for it but it's the one where the main character encounters a very conveniently timed group of muggers/ bad guys who are trying their damnedest to be the most stereotypically unrealistic villains ever. The whole encounter is always rife with unnatural dialogue and it's nothing more than a plot device to show how cool and heroic and strong the MC is .... by beating up the lowest tier skill people imaginable.

They'll always either be young kids or middle aged, but always men and about to do something horrific either to a side character or approached the MC directly looking for a fight (normally in a bar.) And they're laughing about it like a cartoon villain. It makes me mad because it's incredibly rare for people to magically become violent when they're drunk. Usually they have to be high and drunk on a combination of things, but more realistically, violent and have anger issues regardless of inebriation. Even then, you'll see his buddies pull him back (and sometimes apologize!) People aren't stupid, even when they're stupid. That is to say, the writer completely dismisses any sense of self preservation characters should have. You don't even see gangs going out picking fights with every random dude they see on the streets, it's completely counter intuitive to their way of life. I just hate this style of writing because it completely misses the psychology of people who do have these behavioral tendencies.

My inspiration came from a redraw of random OCs, my love for Game of Thrones and costume design, and the annoyance that there always gotta be some kind of magic/mystic folk in fantasy adventure drama. Which actually is stupid because it's fantasy, of course there'll be magic but. I was tired of it. One thing why I got into GoT was because it (at first) had no magic elements, it was just the "normal," ordinary and political life in an alternate world - until the ice giants came etc.
So I kind of wanted to do this. Also a little less deadly than GoT with a less confusing line of heirs to the crown because of diffuse relations........ eventually, it became it's very own thing, but yeah, the first spark came from there.

What inspired my story is Japanese folklore of demons and such. Animes like InuxBoku SS, Noragami, Kamisama Hajimemashita, etc, always spark my eyes due to the supernatural Yokai. I have always wanted to make my own story about Yokai but never had enough experience to draw Yokai. But I still gave it a try after finally having a story in my mind.
I called it Exorcism War and it's about a war between Yokai and Exorcists.

For Hazard Nuzlocke I was playing through Alpha Sapphire and having a great time so I thought, "Why not? Let's nuzlocke this", bought Omega Ruby and the rest is history

It was thank to a random incident.
When i was a kid and i was playing with my cousins,for some reason i found a rock in my toy box. I mockingly used it as a "character" in the same way Plank from ed, edd and eddy is a character: an inanimate object.
I made "Rocky" the hero of this "story" and we laughed a lot. That incident remained in my memory for many years. I had to make a story with that concept, so i started drawing Rocky the rock. My family and friends loved it, so many years later i decided to improve the story and post it here.

And that is how it happened.

The inspiration for Facts About the World changes from one issue to the next, usually the ideas come from a simple everyday encounter and I just build it all up into something completely nonsensical from there. The initial spark for the project as a whole was mainly to do with Ivor Cutler and Reeves & Mortimer; I grew up with their comedy (not remotely appropriate for kids but what the hey) and it definitely warmed me up to dark and surreal humour, as they handle it in a way that feels really warm and personable.

Ahh.. this is a bit of a weird and petty reason but AYAKA was inspired by me being annoyed at a certain anime. But I guess from then on it sort of grew into it's own story lol

What The Fott?© started when we had a fun idea to make a comic based in the Battlelords of the Twenty-Third Century® role-playing game universe.

Cera and her Smart Gun grew out of a concept for a Battlelords animated series pitch we put together in late 2010. Cera was a friend of the main character Jaloon.

The web comic is Cera’s story and her life on the war torn planet of Trell. Once we realized her weapon was a Smart Gun that should talk back everything started to fall into place.
