What is the Inspiration for your July Writers Camp Entry?

Hi all, I'm curious about what the inspiration for your July Writers Camp story was?

Guess I'll go first:

Mine was kinda weird. I was just playing Jet Set Radio and thinking how funny it was that a cop would just outright try to shoot some kids for graffitiing some walls when it's such a small time crime and then I thought about the concept of graffiti being illegal in the first place and I began thinking of the current political climate and how some people just get so offended by art and how so many creators have been putting a lot of politics into their art and movies lately and I realized how dangerous some people find art to be--particularly when it pushes a political agenda and I thought about making a world where art is illegal because it can be so offensive XD.

My story is what happens when you binge a bunch of "ghost hunting" TV shows for a week just...because. That's the inspiration for my story. When you get random replies, what's actually going on? Where do the ghosts go when they only talk to you for a little bit? Stuff like that teased with my brain. Then I decided to write a story with some of those ideas made form.
Of course, that's not the only focus, but it's what started it all.

I didn't have inspiration for my July entry. Just tried to pull something out of thin air. People seemed to think it was pretty decent.

This is the normal way I tend to write stories, so I understand. Sometimes I get lucky, other times not so much.

My inspiration for Heavy Lies the Crown is actually, for once, not based off of a fanfiction I was writing! Would ya lookit that! Ha ha XD

Actually, in a weird way, I was inspired by the story of Esther from the Bible. I'm not a religious person but I grew up with Bible stories. I wanted to write my own version of the commoner that becomes queen, and in the original drafts of the story, Evie was an only child, and Viridian was totally straight.

Someone told me they don't like stories unless there's some kind of twist to keep it fresh, so Jet was born, Nikhil was concocted, and they all got official names literally the WEEK before the start of Writer's Camp!

This is a story somewhere along the lines of eight years in the making, and I couldn't be happier with how it has turned out!

My story sort of came from different ideas that was floating around that I combined together.

A couple big influences were King Arthur, What the Moon Saw by Laura Resau, and myths from Mexico and Central America. One myth I really liked was of Blancaflor, a girl who used her magic to save her lover from her Evil Wizard father. I really liked how she used her abilities.

I got the idea for Morgan after I told my sister that I have a weird palm line that's broken. She the casually remarked that a friend her class said that broken lines meant you were a witch. After that I started thinking up about a character who finds out she's witch and dealing with the aftermath.

Flor and Alma started out as the same person. Originally Flor was apart of short story I thought up about a shaman girl saving her friend from an evil warlock. However as I thought of more stories for her to appear in, she kept shifting from a fearless talented shaman to a nervous newbie. So I split her into two.

I ended up combining the ideas together and figured since Flor was named after a mythical figure, than I'd name the witch character one too. (Now a lot of the characters have names that mean somethingXD)

My inspiration can be traced back to a childhood fascination with Greek Mythology (that never went away) and research I did on blindness for a school project. Since Apollo is one of my favourite gods and I remembered reading somewhere that the oracle of Delphi was blind, I decided that I wanted to explore a blind demigod child of Apollo who inherited a gift of prophecy.

Other elements came from my frustration with the world. For instance, I was frustrated with the idea of always having to look your best, and people getting what they want because of looks (AKA, every portrayal of Aphrodite ever). That's where the character of Shane came from; someone who relies on looks until they encounter a situation where visual elements mean nothing.

I adore the Greek Myths, too <3. They are my forever loves~! And hey, cool, a lot of my stories take into account school projects I've had, too!

One of the characters was originally set to appear in my main novel What Lies Within, and I didn't really feel the character belonged in the story I was currently writing so I set the character aside for another time. When the Writers Camp came around I decided to see what I could do with the character and from there the story just sorta evolved.

The journal I keep by my besides was filled with notes and as I was writing I decided to take the story and go in a different direction so more notes! I also pulled a bit from Japanese culture. I'm a huge fan of it so I couldn't resist sprinkling it in the story.
