Most of the things I read in the Reynard cycle got me to think existentially.

Yet in a weird way, I would say FLCL influenced the atmosphere I like the most.

So I try to reflect that absurd yet relaxed feeling in my comics.

Great topic!

I am very inspired by Pixar, Loony Tunes, Bone, Naussica of the Valley of the Wind, Indiana Jones.... Etc. I love the Hero's Journey and feel it's a great way to structure a story. I think it's a great method to show someone learning something.

I'm also fond of the book "The Secrets of Story" it really gave me the inspiration to dive in and make my comic.

A lot of other comics.
Primarily I was inspired by Hellblazer, because who wouldn't be... it's one of the best comics DC has to offer.....
It offers a supernatural setting, but it's also gut a uniquely balanced attitude towards it - despite the fact there is a heaven and hell, the universe is presented without bias towards one or the other and they are seen as very similar. I kind of took a few inspirational pointers from that.

I was also inspired heavily (and this isn't even a story) by the band Franz Ferdinand. You wouldn't believe how much of my story / aesthetic came from their music and their presentation. Songs do have storytelling though, so I suppose it counts.

quick note songs where originally a story telling and merory helper, most legend before de writing language where passed down by songs and also the melody & rhythm help with remembering (that's why jingles are so catchy) so yeah music and songs do have storytelling in their blood

I get inspired by many different things, but big ones in the past have been Winx Club, Persona 4, and the Rainbow Boys series.

I'm not sure if it counts, but sometimes, when I'm talking to someone, they will come up with a hypothetical that get's my brain working. This happens a lot with my sister when we're discussing anime.

I have to say my inspirations are similar. I would add some random things I used to read for fun that I can't recall the titles too atm. Adams' books really helped me get a narrative voicing I feel, and old epics like gilgamesh I use for a sense of character arcs and overall archetype.

I sometimes borrow from life, although I suppose when I'm drawing I really go blank in my mind. I no longer see lines on a page when I try visualizing the characters or scenes, I see places I have once been to, or want to be at, and people in full detail, people I've not met as far as I'm aware.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Tales of the Abyss. I love the woven intricacy of Fullmetal Alchemist, with its crazy plot with a million threads that ties so neatly in the end and the tightness of the narrative--just try to find a wasted or scene character in there, I dare you. As for Tales of the Abyss, I loved the drama and the character development and the plot twists and how every main character had a lengthy backstory that perfectly explained the person they were when they join the story. I hope my writing inherited something from them xD Someone recently nicknamed my comic Fullmetal Magician which just about killed me.

Also took some cues from The Goose Girl, the Bartimaeus Sequence, Discworld novels, Pendragon...I really like young adult fantasy novels :V

Sci-fi fantasy inspired me a ton, I love stories where a whole new world is created. Star Trek inspired me to be specifically, I also loved anime when I was younger; it showed me that even a simple story with good characters can be intensely interesting and I think that inspired me a lot. Slice of life/ comedy stuff taught me a lot about how to write character interaction.

Interesting that you said playing videogames and anime taught you world building and character development. My comic Shadosassins is inspired in part by shonen manga but it's HEAVILY influenced by fighting games. My comic Afro Brainbuster is inspired by professional wrestling so it writes itself at times, but I also used a lot of influences from old Nintendo64 wrestling games.
