Another curious thought of mine. Ever had those ideas that just seems like a good story but you're too busy with a current project (or with work/school) to develop it? Or those ideas and characters you had as a kid that you wrote up but tossed aside?

I was cleaning out some of my older folders from 6 years ago and I found a whole bunch of old characters, stories, and even character profiles I made. It was really nostalgic and a good reminder of how I spent my teenage years. I remember roleplaying old characters with my friends during middle school and it was the most fun I've had. Even now, I remember the major story arcs that I've written up and shared. But sadly, they were stories I grew out of. I don't even bother thinking about reviving them.

So what about you guys? Do you have anything old that you eventually dropped?

Ugh, yes, so many. Most of them were hot garbage but it's always nice to go back and feel a little nostalgic!

I usually pick the eyes out of my ideas, and weave the best bits into something I'm writing in future. I always wanted, when I was like 15 or so, to write some epic space opera drama told from the perspective of a diplomat, and also there were demons in there for some reason, and there were princesses, and magic... It was, put gently, trash - even thinking about it makes me cringe so hard I get whiplash. (I cleaned up the script when I was about 19 though, and made it into something somewhat comprehensible. It's gonna clock in at about 700-800 comic pages though, so I'm focusing on smaller projects at the moment.

"reduce, reuse, recycle!"

seriously though if i feel like i can take a old character or story idea and repurpose it then I'll do so. Sometimes I'm not as attached to an old story or character and in those cases letting go is necessary. But if I'm certain I can rework the story into something better or mesh it with an existing concept I'll try to work things out ans see how it looks.

Personally I think those "old abandoned concepts" are prime territory for material to expand an existing universe, if it's something you're interested in. It may not work effectively in a current timeline but maybe one that runs alongside a main story line. Other times it may work better to have them exist in the same universe as another story but not interact directly with the main cast. Maybe they exist in the background of the story popping in from time to time but don't play a major role or they operate in their own story.

Most of my older story ideas I'd likely rework into their own new story as they were mostly fandom inspired but for original stories that I've fallen out of love with I've either picked certain characters or just certain traits/elements from those characters or stories to use again.

Maybe I could just be hoarding old junk but I like to believe that some things can be saved, just gotta cut of the moldy bits and preserve what you can :stuck_out_tongue:

I try to write down ideas I don’t have time for and if I come back to them and still like them, find a way to pursue them more. Even if it doesn’t involve the exact plot of characters, sometimes they’ll be a theme or moment I can incorporate into something else. Nowadays if it’s an idea I’m really into I’ll add it to a visible list on my wall so I’m reminded of it every now and then, and if I losee interest or realize it’s not actually great I’ll take it down.

As for old bad ideas from when I was a kid/teen, the bright side of those is that they helped me figure out what I do and don’t like writing. I wrote a (not at all scary) horror story once and never again. Also looking through them and finding common themes or characters in stuff you make now just means you have a solid brand I guess lol

i put them all on my notice board i have one just for that reason.
board number two is for Ideas that have been formed in to part scripts
and board three is for full scripts ready to be typed up or pics ready for drawing digitally
three board systems work perfect

Yep, I've done a lot of that with my characters. Used to rp several little mini stories with a buddy but had a falling out with them. So then I had a whole bunch of lost little characters and stories that I didn't know what to do with. Eventually, I decided to just merge them all into the same universe, rework them until they fit in

But yeah, I've also learned to let go of characters I don't feel anything for. In my old notes, I even have characters names that I don't even recognize! Meanwhile, some older characters left a strong impression that I still would like to add into my story and I'll somehow find a way to

Yeah i definitely have some old ideas and characters that are sort of in the back burner for me to either abandon one day or repurpose when I have more time. My old comic Morsel (which is still on Tapas) is pretty much abandoned because I no longer like the idea but I'm gonna reuse the characters in another story some day.

There have also been characters I don't feel attached to anymore so I let go of them. In elementary/middle school, I had a bunch of OCs that I only vaguely remember now. Haha. Plus, I've come to the conclusion that some of my old ideas aren't always going to work in a comic structure, so I might just write a novel or make a game out of them.

That does happen all the time, I may change a bit to make it a bit more interesting before adding into my comic. Even the idea I don't need, I still keep it somewhere in case in the future I can look back at it again and change a bit before adding into my comic.

We have a million ideas. We keep the ones we love most stashed close and ONE DAY when we have time after this story is done, we will pull out the next one.

Recycling seems to be the name of the game, and I agree wholeheartedly. Whenever I have a new idea, I try to stuff as many older resources into it as I can: old character names, designs, color schemes, etc. It's great when I come up with "crowd stories" that have lots of main characters, because then I can salvage a ton of old ideas at once~. ^^

Yass reuse or recycle but kinda improve or change the ideas better in a way for me personally. I don't like reusing old ideas very exactly.

most of my "old ideas" tend to be things that I honestly don't wanna look back or like yes,, like what you said, stories I grew out of and lost interest with reasons. Some were even things that I definitely had a bad experience with when I shared these "ideas" with some old friends.

There was always a reason why I dropped or cancelled using it.

but this recent comic I am starting today is a precious old "idea" I had been keeping 10 years ago in my silly drawing book (over the next years I never knew I was going to get back to it in forever because of how silly I think it is) BUT now,, I stumbled upon it, realized how much it made me happy back in the days so, I am reusing the idea with more development, logic and all seriousness pff. I am honestly very happy to reuse this idea, improve it and kinda also brings me more to my good memories when I was younger.

((probably gonna make a meme out of this comparing 2009 version of idea and 2019 version of idea showing my silly childhood art vs now lmao))

At this point... I try to forget about them. Not completely, but put them really far from me.
My brain is working constantly at full intensity and it tires me terribly. Also difficult to concentrate on a single project when so many ideas, new and old, are turning in my head constantly. My main effort is always to clean up, sort, store, throw away. Otherwise I can't perform at all.

I’ve turned my old characters and refined and changed their original story to turn into a One-Shot. This way I can get the hang of making manga before I make a serialized story that’s really important to me.

Use them if they're actually good and I just lacked the skills to use them.

Dismantle them for parts, if they're not good but some little aspects were interesting and can be developed.

Toss them if they're unsalvageable.

I agree with recycling stories. Keeping notes on those harts/half written stories are good things for me to come back to every once in a while and see if they're worth it or not. In fact, that's how my novel here on Tapas was created - from this old story I found when I was reading old stuff.

Though I have to say that there's a couple of notes that I wrote many years ago and I still read them and think "Yup, this is good as it is", but I haven't yet written those stories yet..maybe one day!

I try to save the old ideas, drafts and characters for reusing, or inspiring - even if I outgrew the initial idea, or now see gapping plot holes. That doesn't mean the concept can't be polished up with my current knowlege and experience if I still find it interesting enough and worth telling.

I think I never droped an old idea they still lives in my brain, what I didn't do yet was publish them. But every single thing I created is resting and being evolved inside my mind as we speak.I remember them all.

What do I do with old ideas? Recycle, recycle, recycle.
