What's more important to you, art or writing?

Writing is pretty important though if the art looks like hot garbage, its hard for me to be sucked in. I've given up on a lot of stories with good art and no plot faster than stories with good plot and mediocre art.

The art should be appropriate for the story really.

This right here, mark it in a frame and hang it on a wall for everyone to see. What works for a story may not work on another. Art style is an indirect way to convey tone.

However I don’t think someone should slack too much on art. If the art (or layout) is distracting or confusing, I tend not to read it.

The writing is more important if making a comic, manga, light novel, etc as the story is what keeps the reader while the art is to provide detail to the story that couldn't be done normally through writing alone.

Writing. If it's an interesting story, I am quite forgiving of the art so long as I can tell what's happening.

But if you got a bland story with amazing art, I'd be much more interested to see if the creator does illustrations than follow the comic honestly.

Writing matters the most. Artists with varying styles can catch my attention if they write well, even bad art can keep me around if the writing is good. It’s why people like sprite comics, or those stick figure joke comics, or old bethesda games. The art only has to be tolerable. Pretty art is just icing!

I have had plenty of beautiful comics on here that...had very choppy or exposition heavy writing. The bad dialogue, feeling like I am being told what to think of the story, ect drew me away from it. You gotta know how to show your reader the story, even if your art is iffy.

Now, the problem lies in if the artist is capable of telling the story with their art skill level. Or if the artist/writer has the maturity to write something cohesive and show, not tell, a story that is worth it. Seen a lot of that too! Where the concept is phenomenal but the writer is clearly not ready to write it.

It's always going to be about how well both are married for me. Beautiful art can help keep an okay story afloat, and an amazing story can shine through sub par art, but at the end of the day I'm just looking for stories that hit me right.

I don't care too much for the art as long as it's decent. For me, writing is the most important part of comics in any genre. In comedy, without a good joke the comic won't be funny even if it looks good. In story-based comics if nothing makes sense and the dialogue is unnatural I won't like it even if it looks really good.

Writing, definitely. I'm more willing to read a comic with an amazing story but bad art than one with a bad story but amazing art.

Art usually draws me in and then I leave because I don't enjoy the writing.

I start reading because of the art (not necessarily because of its technical skill, but rather because of it's expressiveness and visual appeal to me). I stay or leave because of the writing OR if the art changes in a direction I don't enjoy.

I think a lot of writers (esp western comic writers, who are often not expected to even know the basics of drawing) undersell how much the art is part of the writing. It's literally the prose part of the written piece. It's like opening a book and seeing typos in the first sentence, and a run-on sentence that doesn't make any sense by the time it reaches its period. Are you gonna read that because the outline is cool? Lol no, you wouldn't.

Hmm it's hard to say. Some series I'm definitely drawn to for the cool art style, and others the story... I think generally speaking, for "professional level/quality" comics I care more about the story, and for hobbyist or amateur I need for the art to be not necessarily "good" objectively, but visually interesting in order to click and check it out.

I don't want to sound shallow by saying the artwork is the most important thing when it comes to storytelling, so I would say the writing is is the most crucial. I don't like to thing of any form of media having poor artwork, rather I think of it as having a distinct art technique that separates it from everything else in a way. Take for example Ed, edd, n eddy with the boiling lines that move on each character. The writing and jokes are still spot on if I say so.

Mainly, I need to see character development and a story with sensible writing structures as it sets the tone of what can be expected of a story. Even is it's mostly hand-drawn, if it has a good story, I'm there for the whole thing.

My main answer would be both. Personally I would say the art for my comic, because that is what people visually see, but good art cannot cover a bad story. But, my script isn't written like a beautiful novel. Rather I get the main ideas down as clearly as possible. But the point of a comic is the fusion of both skills (whether you are a lone wolf or a team player) and how the fusion of skills makes a great piece.

I don't think one is any more important than the other. You want your comic to look pleasing to the reader's eye, but you also want to tell an entertaining story.

Personally, both are important to me since they pull each other together. The writing is important because even with great art if the writing behind it is weak then everything will fall apart. With that said, the art should be done with great care since the first thing that will judge the comic is the eyes. If the art is so glaring, then regardless of the great writing it's highly likely that it'll be put down.

For example, One's manga "Mob Psycho 100" artwork isn't exactly the best but it's still expressive, readable, and charming enough to convince a reader to realize that there's a amazing story behind it.

Overall, good writing and good art makes a great comic.

There are some comics that have good art, but I lost interest in them when the story still has loose ends and/or when the characters aren't interesting. There are also some comics that have mediocre art, but they still capture my attention. It basically depends on two factors regardless if I was a creator or not; good story and interesting characters.

I feel like there's a fusion in writing and art with comics that make it pretty inseparable. They go hand in hand. But I will say that art is so much more subjective than writing, that there's more forgiveness for it. Art can get pretty squirrely and still make a lot of sense. Writing though--yikes. When you're trying to write a clear and entertaining story, you can't be quite as rough on the edges, you got to get some polish in there or people will get confused.

Like for me the art may be the initial draw, but once I'm reading, if the characters don't really feel like real people, I am out.

I can’t say that I can decide between the two. Writing gives me the ability to express my feelings with words, but art allows me to bring those words to life.
