What's the most popular genre nowadays for you?

I've been asking myself this already a couple of times, without really trying to create something based on "popular trends" because i'm not into thst at all, but just out of curiosity, from your point of view, what's comic/novel genre that is generally well appreciated by viewers and most of the time triggers people into looking at it?
For me, i think it's Sci-fi, something elastic that give a particular sparkle to overally any plot and can be shaded/mixed as in details or main plot as well (i'm a romantic, but this is not about our favorite genre to use in stories).

I also think romance is still pretty in trend nowadays.

I don't really know why for sure, but maybe wish fulfillment, the angst and drama leading up to the star MCs being together, and the cliches that may get tiresome but people still being comfortable with them and find them charming and entertaining keeps people reading more romance.

Romance and romance hybrids are the most popular trend in books and webcomics.

Always been this way, especially for novels though more recently for webcomics since they are both a newer branch of comics (not REALLY new but you know what I mean), and comic publishers generally ignore that genre (this even more true for LGBT+ romances, which webcomics are MORE than happy to fill in for)

A trend is something that's popular for a while until the next big thing, Romance has been popular for so long that I don't think it's a trend anymore. It's just a popular genre that I feel like will stay popular because yeah people are always shipping even in non-romance comics.

I feel like it's kinda hard to judge whats trending when it comes to indie comics, everyone just does what they want since comics are such a long term commitment and run for years. It's not the same as Instagram art trends that come and go really quickly.
The only 'trend' I saw was that there was a lot of Hades and Persephone comics released around the same time a few years ago but that was probably just a coincidence.

Oh I just remembered another trend was the Pokemon Nuzlock comics that were popular like 7 years ago, they were usually sketch comics and the authors play through the game would create the narrative in a way. but I don't think I've seen an actual trend like that for ages.

The currently trending genre for me I think is "Isekai" kind of fantasy, when the protagonist from real world of ours get transferred to/ reborn in fantasy world or vice versa.
Just check the popular and trending fantasy genres... You'd get what I meant.

Also yeah, romance or story with romance subgenre will more likely to sell like hot cakes... Especially if there is some hot scene.

I think the "relatable slice-of-life with-author-as-MC" webcomic has been really popular ever since Sarah Andersen pretty much single-handedly made it a thing (was it already a big thing before? Am I giving her too much credit?)

On Tapas I think I've noticed some of these that are new get subscribers pretty quickly compared to other kinds of comics.

it's not personally my kind of genre (i rly dislike romance stories lol) so i can't say i personaly feel to it, but its.. pretty obviously the current Trend

My most favorite genre is Sci-fi, though I enjoy most genres. Slice of life is almost always interesting, fantasy is fantastic, and comedy is enjoyable.

My least favorite genres are popular. Personally I don't like the romance genre on its own. I'll tolerate it as a sideplot, but as the main story I don't like it. Keeping that in mind, I don't like BL or GL. To me they seem like gimmicky romance story. Why not keep BL and GL in the same genre as romance?

I read that as game and I was going to volunteer maplestory2 . . . but I think there's a variety of genres out there that cater to different audeinces and at times certain genres are more in spotlight than others.

It's around Halloween so it's supernatural, spooky stuff. Personally I find myself gravitating towards writing that . .. but I can't. I've tried. Spooky and scary is not my strong suit. I think around chrismas people prefer more fantasy and cheesy romance things. Summer is dystopian. Does anyone else have something to add, I'm not too sure of my perspective compared to others.

If you are asking about web comic, specifically webtoons and tapas user, its Romance and Comedy.
If you are asking about what is the most successful genre as a whole , it's superheroes, but its more like the success of the specific titles themself more than the genre, such as Avengers, Heroes Academia, Onepunch Man, most of the fan like the stories and characters, but don't actually like the superheroes genre itself.
If you are asking about what genre has the largest, most hardcore fanbase, willing to support any kind of amateur works as long as it's belong to that genre, then it's BL.

I agree. Romance in small doses is fine, but if it doesn't develop the characters in some way, it's pretty worthless in my opinion.

After browsing the popular section, I also agree on the BL stuff. Even though some series look pretty tame and comedic, that label feels like the modern equivalent of a trashy dimestore romance cover.

On topic: my favorite genre is comedy.

For webcomics, my BL series do rather well so . . . lol oh well don't mind being a sell out. Though I've read a lot of the genre myself so it fits. As for manga, isekai and ecchi/hentai seem to still be on a roll (read a lot of these too, ahh im such a degenerate . . ). Done both and admittedly, yeah its not bad for popularity haha. These are genres where the reader already has a general idea and expectations, so I try to satisfy the reader's fantasy (actually I'm a tease my readers hate me lol) but then steer it in into a direction that is more true to what I want to write. Like this, working within the genre is more of a way to grab the readers attention and keep them curious.

As for myself, if I'm actually gonna read read, then its usually the seinen genre.

Sci-fi is a great genre. I love how it explores the nature of being human by using mechanical things and stuff. Fantasy is great, too, of course, and probably the easiest genre to write in!
