Its more of a game of compromise. The larger target audience, the more people it'll capture. While a more specific target audience will generate more loyalty, returning audience.
My web comic tells a story of life of a middle aged fox monster, who is stuck in a fantasy world. Intended for ages of 15 and over, it has enough "quirkiness" for the younger audience, while also enough "meaning" for older readers. I could argue that some characters can be marketed to furries, but that's not the main selling point.
