I'm from Romania, which is one of those countries where you constantly get told "This content isn't available in your country." All the ads I've watched brought me only 10 coins each, and the app would tell me that there were no more ads available before I got to watching 10 ads in a row.
That was in the good old days when there were ads available, and even then there were days, or times of day, when there were no ads to be watched, not even a single one. For a while now, there have been no ads at all. So I've only been tipping my absolute favourite artist, and only 100 coins per update, and that's going to end soon because I can't get more free coins, and I'm on the verge of losing my job (I have 6 weeks left of my contract), so I can't afford to buy coins right now (I have bought coins in the past, because I could not get enough ads).
I used to tip more creators during the tipping events, but not a lot more, because I couldn't get enough coins to tip everyone I would have wanted to tip.
As a creator, though, I have the opposite problem: several of my readers have left comments asking about enabling tipping, so I'm assuming they would tip if I could enable tipping. Unfortunately, I seem to have hit a brick wall at around 200 subs, and I can't get to the 250 subs required to unlock tipping. But I would never expect all of my subscribers to tip, just as they don't all "like" my chapters.
I think the real question is, as mentioned by others before me, not why not all readers take one minute to watch ads and tip you for each update, but why don't all readers take one second to click on the little heart that says they've liked the chapter. And the answer is that you have to earn even that, by wowing them to the point where they'd be generous enough not with their money, but simply with a click. I've read chapters where I haven't liked that chapter enough for one click, and I've read chapters that have made me reach for the "tip" button and click that one, because the chapter (not necessarily the whole comic) was that good. And given the statistics, I seem to have a group of loyal readers who like every update I make, but I have to write something better than usual to get some extra likes from the other regular readers. Which is great for me, because it's great feedback and it lets me see when my writing is better and which are the boring bits, and it would be so hard to get feedback otherwise. But to answer the question of why it's so hard to get tips, I think it's just a matter of making your readers love your series to the point where they'd feel compelled to tip. The one series where I tip for every update does actually give me that feeling. Each update is really good (when it's not as good as the others, I tip fewer coins, by the way). I tend to think of the tip button as an upgrade to the like button, and use it as such.
So, in my opinion, you can get a subscriber if you can get them hooked to the story, you can keep them as regular readers if they stay interested, but for them to tip, you need to get them to the point where they squeal and jump around the room when they see there's an update, and then clap their hands at the end of said update. And you get extra coins if said behaviour is done by a respectable gentleman in a public place and he squeals like a little girl for your updates only.
But this is coming from someone who isn't able to unlock tipping. I'm actually curious to see if there's any correlation between the number of likes an update gets and the amount of coins tipped for that update (and the number of tippers), and if episodes with more likes also bring in more tips (or more tippers) when they are posted. Can anyone who has tipping enabled check how the numbers fluctuate for each update (amount of likes for that update, and coins tipped right after the update)?
