Yeah, so I've gathered it's generally a bad idea to give this advice on such forums for subs from earlier posts. It was good to get everyone's thoughts on the subject.
I still think having a good story is severely underestimated but, everyone's made fair points and I've gotten a better understanding now.
@benji Screenwriting has saved my LIFE. I think it's exceptionally useful if you're going to make comics because it's a primarily visual storytelling method. which is why I recommend Story by Robert McKee to any aspiring comic creator.
@crayon_witch I mean I agree, yeah the art should serve the story. I just wanted to keep in mind that you don't necessarily need a professional level skill in art to tell a good story. But yeah you should be able to visually express a story and that's an important factor for comics. One Punch Man is a great example of this yeah
@shazzbaa All incredible points and I can't disagree with any of them. I'm now seeing a flaw in the premise of my original question after it became glaringly obvious why you can't just shake someone by the shoulders and say study and learn to make a better story when they're in the midst of it.
First and foremost, I'd want creators to do just that, keep creating. And by virtue of creating, finishing, and creating more while also learning and putting in that effort, getting better is inevitable so long as you're mindful and don't quit. Whether or not it finds and audience or 'gets big' is outside our control however, and no guarantees there.
@ratscout ; Maybe but certain stories last years and years while some burn for a while (like a trend) and fizzle out later. I'm interested in the ones that last for years, and inevitably they're the ones that are constructed as an objectively good story.
Nowadays we have a dearth of good story cause I don't think the majority of creators are even studying the craft anymore. Trends are temporary but certain core aspects of storytelling-- archetypes seen in every culture, storylines that resonate with humanity--last.
We'll have to peaceably disagree cause I don't think every aspect of art is 100% subjective. Content is subjective, the the manner in which the story is told, how it's constructed and how it unfolds, there are objective principles in the underylying architecture.
And yeah, from all the replies I've gotten so far, it's become obvious that 'make a good story' (simplified advice , but even with more detailed examples of what makes a good story) is useless when it comes to those types of topics. Understood.
@LCT-COMICS Yeah. I suppose I"m frustrated with all the focus on short term gains but....I can't control anyone and I"m not here to convince anyone either. I just wanted to understand why no one's giving any credence to the need for good story and I think I'm starting to get it.
It is a big price to hone a craft and yeah. Many won't. But whether they do or not is not in my hands. I still wish every creator the best, the process of making something does have some value, individually, I think.
