I read about ASMR on google but it didn't explain things to me in a way for me to really make sense of it.

I'm thinking of making one of my female characters in my story be a fan of ASMR, but I need to make sense of ASMR before I can do that

Can anyone tell me the real purpose and effect of ASMR on a person that views it?

it's purpose is to calm you down. there are so many different sounds that different people use because different sounds are soothing to different people, like how'd you'd listen to sleep sounds.

My MC in "Hushabye Prince" is a fan of ASMR because his nerves are usually on edge, and he uses water sounds, and things like fizzy noises to help him relax

For the longest time I thought asmr was completely ironic, cause I’m autistic and the noises genuinely make me want to vomit

Like Leyelle said, it's meant to be relaxing. The actual term refers to a tingling sensation in the back of your neck that some people experience when they hear those types of sounds, though you don't actually need to experience that to find the videos relaxing. I personally listen to ASMR before bed sometimes, but almost never experience any sort of tingles.

It's also not for everyone, as BlackKat pointed out, lol. There are some sounds I absolutely cannot stand.

Does most media really have a purpose beyond people enjoying it? I think people listen to ASMR for the same reason people listen to chill music or rewatch their comfort show.

I don’t listen to ASMR because I can’t hear it.

I tried listening to asmr videos once. It gave me creep vibes, like I gotta get outta here. Plus mouth noises and butting against the mic sounds are extremely irksome

Well, according to Google, ASMR stands for autonomous sensory meridian response; a term used to describe a tingling, static-like, or goosebumps sensation in response to specific triggering audio or visual stimuli.

ASMR's purpose depends on the preferences of people and the type of props used to generate certain sounds, which that should be either relaxing or pleasant. I believe its something quite personalized and not everyone enjoys certain sounds and visuals.

For example, I have no interest in food ASMRs, neither Make-up restoration ones since the sounds are too "munchy" sometimes. But I do enjoy ASMR videos of Slime creation / Scoopability and wood carving.

Another type of ASMR video that I despise its people drawing on their iPads, I don't know what's wrong with the sound, but I don't know if its the pressure they put on their pen but the only think I can think of is of slapping their hands and tell them to be less brute on their screens/pens xD
