Would you trust non-artists that use AI out of ignorance?

I'm 100% against AI. I'm maybe getting an offer from a client for my art WITHOUT AI, however I'm seeing this client has used AI for comics... I told them I wasn't willing to do anything related to AI.

Would you trust these types of clients? On one hand I think maybe they are ignorant, on the other hand it could be they won't respect artists nor anybody's art... But how to know?

Maybe should I trust my gut and just get away? What would you do?

I'm an artist. I take commissions. And sometimes, I've had clients come up to me with references and genuinely say "I found this on pinterest/google, and it fits my character, I just don't know if it's AI. If it is, I hope you don't hold it against me."

In that case, I gently tell them that yes, it is AI, and no, I won't hold it against them. For artists, it's easy to tell, but since most of my family and friends can't draw, they have a hard time recognizing AI for themselves.

The fact that they are coming up to real artists to draw their XYZ, to me, shows that going to AI to 'create' isn't their first instinct and thought.

But in the end, follow your gut, it's usually right

I've done a lot of research. I know a guy who started implementing AI translations into his model and created over 40 new jobs. He's very transparent about how AI is used in the process and his business is thriving. I know other people who use AI for a proof of concept to run ideas past their clients, once the client approves, they start drawing. If they've found a business model that works and is profitable, they can hire more people.

I think it would depend on the person.

If it's some out of touch grandma and it was for personal use, who cares really. It sucks, but she's not trying to use it to sell something.

However, I fell like the majority of active users online know what AI art is and know what the general opinion of it is. I don't think most people can get away with ignorance. Especially if they are creating something to sell.

Even for personal use, the servers that run AI eat up a lot of energy and resources. It's not great for the environment.

Depends. If its someone who's genuinely ignorant, not using it for profit, and open to listening, that's one thing. Unfortunately, I've yet to actually meet someone like that

On the one hand, I can understand not wanting anything to do with people who clearly support the use of AI-generated imagery-- if you suspect this person only wants your art so they can morph or modify it with AI later on (i.e. a new character design for their next "comic") you should probably refuse, or at least make it clear that whatever you draw for them does not come with a free license for repurposing.

But on the other hand...does it really make sense to refuse to SELL art to someone just because they've been involved with AI at all??
Like, so they've committed the sin of using image generation for art...if their punishment is not being allowed to buy art from actual humans anymore, then exactly what do you expect them to do from now on...? ^^;;; You've barred them from the right to make the 'ethical' choice; now if they don't have the ability or will to draw (which is morally neutral, btw) their only remaining choice to obtain art is the 'unethical' one.

At the very least, you should talk to this person and make clear your stance on AI images, if you're worried about them misusing your work. That is, as long as you don't have any real proof of such behavior in the past.
Again, if this person is obviously shady, like people who commission sketches and use AI to color them for free, you can totally just say no. If you just don't feel like dealing with any potential consequences, you can also just say no; you don't have to sell your art to anyone if you don't want to. But if you just really want to know where this person's mindset is and whether they're aware of the harm that AI imagery can do...you kinda have to ask them, there's no way around it.

In general, I'd be okay with a client who used AI to get a rough idea of what they want, but I would be extremely wary of someone who tried to sell work with AI components to people. Invariably, every AI merchant I've met talks and acts like a scammer, and scammers can't be trusted no matter what they're doing.

It's just fine for a non-artist client in the preproduction phase for something to have used AI, as long as they don't put any AI output in what they produce to sell. For instance if they're a writer, using AI in a novel would be a red flag for me.

Depends. I would inform them of the issues and if their response isn't the correct one, there's nothing I can do, and i can't trust them

Agree with this in particular. What's the sense in preventing someone from doing the right thing just because they made a mistake once?

I find that the average person who uses A.I. is well-meaning, but turns to A.I. due to things like ignorance, budget problems, etc., and will openly admit to doing it. You're within your right to refuse the commission, but I wouldn't dismiss them just because they used A.I.

Now if they go on to brag about using A.I., or lie about using A.I., or say that there's no place for human artists and you need to embrace the future, then that's a totally different story.
