I saw this thread yesterday, and it disappeared on me! And I really wanted to chat.
Anyway, I think in all my books, even fantasy, I work with the conflicts that are localized and motivation-based, so if my antagonists win, it doesn't destroy the world, just shifts the balance of power.
In my latest story, my antagonists actually had won 5 thousand years ago. My main character works on undoing the collateral damage done to one individual that a revenge curse of the losers caused in today's world.
It's a small thing, but it is personally important to him.
I know that such things are not as sexy as the end of the world, but I love political and power games and humans...
