Like my OC Garnet was just named Garnet until 20 minutes ago when I finally gave her a surname. Her BF (who I have yet to draw) still doesn't have a surname. What am I doing with my time?

the only excuse I have is that these characters are imaginary even in the world of their stories, so apparently, Texas was too scatter brained to give them full names. Blame her.

All of mine do but you never really hear about them.

You guys give your OCs last names??

You’re definitely not alone, I do this too  and what’s worse, my co creator does this as well so we just sit there together, working on the plot and then like:
Me: “oh right, gotta give Doyun a surname though. Tanya also doesn’t have one yet… and Arseny… also Mina’s grandma…”
Them: “yeah, right. Gotta do that.”
Both of us: proceed to talk about irrelevant stuff and forget about this again
Though to be honest, there’s two things worse than this, like 1. Me not even thinking that a last name might be required and then struggling a lot to make one up from scratch (this doesn’t sound like a problem, but trust me, as soon as it comes to royal families it is) and 2. the thing my friend and co creator does a lot, which is giving the OC a surname only and then spend 2 hours trying to come up with a name for them, only to discard it 3 days later because it sounds like the name of some controversial historical figure. Mind you, this exact thing happened to us twice. I must really suck at names lol

lol. yes most of my Ocs anyway. even the cat has a last name, though it's just her two owners' surnames

I am just a bit joking, in fact I think most of my OCs have last names too, but only because at some point they should be relevant xD But not in all the stories, because if anything, my writer would prefer to not give anyone any names whatsoever :joy:

It is even worse in my case, I often forget to give my characters a name or indicate to the reader what their name is. In my first two chapter, the five members of the love pentagram make an appearance but only â…– had actual names. When it was pointed out to me, I had to rewrite the next chapter to make sure everyone was given a proper name.

I actually read a comic once where none of the characters had names. it was a really good comic, but took some getting used to

Quite a few of my OCs don't have last names. Last names are usually the telltale sign that I'm in too deep. :stuck_out_tongue:

Half of my characters don't have last names  I make them up once they're needed cx

For me, it depends on the context of the character. Some of my characters have last name, but only if it makes sense for the story. Other characters will never have a last name mentioned or it's not important, so I don't come up with one.

I only ever give them surnames if it becomes relevant. In Trepsasser there are a grand total of 4 characters with a surname, 2 of which share the same one (Stormsen) and one of which is only known by his surname and has yet to receive a canonical given name (Grayson)

I only give my ocs last names when it’s relevant. Like in my fantasy stories it doesn’t feel as important, but in August there’s Gregor Slayton or Jerry Finestine who are more often referred to by their last names, or in my story about Victor (the fire guy) He and his dad are sometimes referred to by their last name (Which is Champion) kind of weird last name, but Victor’s dad got to choose whatever he wanted when he came to the human world. One might assume he likes winning. That also explains Victor’s first name as well :skull:

They only get a last name if it's relevant to the story. In some cases, last names don't exist in the context of the story so there is that too.

Claudita has no last name.

And "Akala Maya"... "Maya" is more a reference to her illusion abilities.

Elyn has a last name , I just never use it. Coostaark I forgot to give him one . Naaririel and Lillian don’t have one.

Some of mine have last names, but they're rarely mentioned

I gave my main characters last names. I think I changed one of them during an early chapter to be more fitting to a race I gave them, which. was fine cause I never said it in the comic itself until then. I throw their last names in once and a while just so they're known, I think 2 of them I still haven't stated anywhere.

I gave some of the recurring cast last names, have them all in a word doc. I barely remember any of their first names tho. Unless my writing calls for it, I don't bother giving them one.

Depends on the intention and story setting, characters may not need last names, or even a name at all.
Besides, not all cultures have first name surname formula, or even a name that contains two or more words. Even those which now have, might only reserve those last names to certain group/class of people in the past.

My current work however, have familial ties as a significant plot point, so I have to give some of them last names.

I usually come up with lastname for my characters. They are usually themed after an element and/or their cultural background.

I was almost not going to give Zeta a lastname but I ended up changing that after finding some old notes where I called him Aaron. Now his name is Aaron Zeta.

I couldn't even tell you what Anastasia's last name is lol. I never gave Evangeline one and hell idea what philipes is. The only one I gave a last name to was Vance but idea what it is lol.

I never give last names to any of my characters, lol. Even in stories that are centred around family structures... tbh in real life I never think about last names, I'm from a culture where it's very uncommon to call anyone by their last names, so it just never crosses my mind.

I´m the opposite lol It´s so weird for me not thinking about a character´s surname.

Sometimes I even need to stop to think, wait, why am I using their surnames instead of their given name in this particular scene or context?
I think it´s because I used to read a lot of murder mysteries back when I was a teen (and in those novels, it was a common thing people referred to each other by their surnames, hence I picked up that habit)

The majority of my oc's have no surname outside of a few of them, I personally don't think it is that weird

You´re not the only one, I sometimes forget them and put them another last name lol

For years, the vast majority of my OCs have had no last names. At some point I just worked a reasoning for having no last names into the world building and it actually ended up working out pretty well lmao
