With American Comic books selling poorly and people aren't excited to read those comic books nowadays, I've been wondering: Will there be a comic book renaissance again? Is there any hope for that again? Let me know in the comments below.

There are loads of fantastic American comics doing well right now, but they're webcomics, or children's graphic novels.

The age of floppies dominated by the big two is unlikely to come back around, in my opinion, because the format is expensive and the distribution model is exclusionary. If people can read great comics on their phones, why would they traipse out into some gloomy comic book shop to buy expensive, yet cheaply-printed floppies full of ads?

The way people consume comics is changing, and I think we're going to see the same pattern as we've seen in parts of Asia, where webcomics become the way people read serialised comics, rather than floppies. There'll still be books, just like how floppies get collected into trades, larger webcomics get sold as books, either through publishers or self-publishing.

It's not necessarily a bad thing. Webcomics allow diverse creators who have been gatekept out of the industry to have a shot at making it big based on storytelling and art skill and market appeal, and they're much more relevant to modern young adults than the rather cringe attempts by the big two in recent years to make stuff for that audience. That said, I don't think the US will be as big a dominating force in comics any more. It'll still be a powerhouse due to just... having a lot of people and so inevitably a lot of creators, but we're going to see creators much more spread out around the world.

IMO the comic book culture is way better in every way than it was 30 years ago

Maybe if they pay their slav... I mean workers right then MAYBE there could be a renaissance. I remember someone saying that it's the video game comics that pay-well nowadays.

I think the big two should just focus on webcomics. It wouldn't hurt? I heard that Webtoons Bat Family comic is doing super well. Marvel tried doing it with Eternals on Tapas but... I mean... it's the MCU Eternals. Sooooooooooooo....

That said, when James Gunn announced his films for his new line-up and what inspired them, he managed to make them best-selling again. If anything, I think the future is in DC's hands... because I have NO clue what Marvel's doing imho.

Like they have something with Spider-Man (probably the greatest superhero of our time aside from Superman and Batman)... but they constantly push the readers away.... and one of the writers (Dan Slott) who's practically in charge just keeps blocking people for commenting wrong. Like not saying OFFENSIVE THINGS... commenting wrong.

I remember a trending tweet where someone was like "How many Spider-Man fans have been banned by him?" when Across the Spider-Verse came out and SO MANY people were telling the most absurd stories. He also famously doesn't like Spider-Man? It's just... what's going on?

Then there's Zeb Wells fetish for shock and then there's John Romita Jr. (can't seem to get facial expressions right). And then yeah... the editors.

Unless they make some serious changes, then I doubt it. It seems like more people are interested in buying manga and indie stuff these days anyway.

I would very much like a comic renaissance, but I am not seeing it happening. If I look in regular book stores, there are not many comics there. How can people that are not really into comics, occassionally run into some random comic they have not seen before....?

Comics were never as big in Germany as in the USA but we have a huge comic section in the book store in
my hometown and I live in a small town. There are comics in the supermarket and they also started publishing
"The Phantom" again, you also find comics in shops in train stations.
I lived in Berlin and there are many comic book shops.
I feel like there is a renaissance because graphic novels are also pretty popular nowadays,
the renaissance is just not happening for Marvel & DC but they were never interesting for me even
though they did a lot for the popularity of comics. The euro comic scene was always different
and more varied imo
