I am so conflicted with this topic. For the longest time I pushed for my art, even going to college for Graphic Design in 2003. Here I sit, 16 years later. I'm a full-blown author being invited to conventions so I have to confess, I guess I was a better writer. It doesn't mean I don't draw and use my art to spiff up my content and develop my written novels, but it's a fascinating dilemma.
The turning point was getting an abnormal melanoma on my leg while pregnant with my first kid (2009-2010). So, I decided to finish that story I was writing in high school that reached over 25,000 words (2003). I got mad. I went about writing the story all wrong. Then I glared at the mountain of sketchbooks from all my years with several sketches of that Graphic Novel idea I never get anywhere on and asked "What if I try writing it as a novel with what I learned?"
Skip ahead - Cedric the Demonic Knight has 63 reviews on Amazon with a 4.6 star rating and a bronze Reader's Favorite book award for Fiction-Mythology. And that thing from high school? I just finished releasing the final book in the trilogy. I had to rewrite book one from the start, but I finished my labor of love.
At the end of the day, I can pump out a novel ten times faster than drawing a single picture, but I enjoy doing both.
Thus, I am a better writer, more sufficient and confident and struggle far less than when i sit to draw anything.
