I'm new to the whole webcomic thing, and I just started doodling out the first few pages of my webcomic15. It's colored and there's some shading on the characters. In the most recent issue I settled on an even simpler style to get comics out even faster, since I work a couple jobs and don't have too much time for art.

But in order to save time even more, I'm considering putting out the next couple pages in black and white with screentones.

Is this a good idea? Will I be dooming my webcomic from any potential growth? I know it's a change and it's experimental, but I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on it, and if they've done something similar with their own webcomics. I know some people will go from black and white to color, but not sure about the opposite.

I haven't done so myself but I've seen a number of comics go from color to black and white for reasons like your own, sometimes for short periods then going back to add color later or just keeping the rest of the comic in black and white.

I think the main thing is just letting readers know what you plan to do. For the most part Tapas community is very understanding so you're not likely to get any negative feedback from it.

Amongst creators you're gonna find a lot of love for black and white... And a lot of reasons why they use it for their projects. So if it fits what you want to accomplish with this project, go for it.

BUT... and I mean BiG BUT, there's definitely a lot of bias towards color from readers and some publisher/host sites. There are people who just won't read or print/publish black and white comics.

Honestly yeah you could do it! I recommend finding a creative loophole too and you could potentially make a reason in regards to story and aesthetic to make it black and white.

It depends on your style and your taste. But to me, I prefer black and white. Because I feel that it will be faster and easier that you don't have to color here and there.

it depends on your style but to be honest with you, we are in a day and age where color is much more appealing and people want to see that more often. so if you switch, it could possibly hurt you and you could also lose readers. just keep that in mind. but if you are okay with that then go for it. at the end of the day, you want to do whats comfortable for you.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. It seems that most everyone agrees it's fine to do either, though color is preferred. Guess I'll have to learn to color super fast, eh?

Absolutely, and i fully support you. i had to make that decision myself a long time ago and let me tell you, it was worth it. what i did to make my life easier was to keep my work flat colored. no extra shading or detail, just simple grade school coloring and you know what, i work faster than ever. This is a sample of my work15. maybe it will help you :relaxed:

Hell yeah, join the black and white club

However, please be very careful when it comes to using screentones.

Screentones were made for print, and very often, using them in digital works creates screentone moire: that thing where the screentones make weird grid-like patterns. I would personally suggest sticking with flat greys--however, if you can pull it off, more power to you!

i misread this post and now I'm back lol.

B/W is a great way to learn values and spaces. I do my comics in black and white too. Sure it takes less time to theorize what colours look best with each other and stuff and a lot of people find it easier but tbh, it's just as time consuming as colouring when you're doing it thoroughly. your lines will matter more because you can't hide it behind sunset gradients. I say, do it if you really love black and white.

I love manga so i feel more comfortable doing black and white and I think it just suits my overall style and what I want to do for my comics.

there's definitely a charm in seeing nice lines and black cell shading when done right..

but yeah, if you are aiming to get featured, might as well stick with colours.

but then again, not all featured comics are great and sometimes non-featured ones have hundreds of thousands of likes.

My whole comic outside the cover pages is black and white. It's got a great retro quality that color just doesn't have.

Instead of going black and white, you might think about going two-color. A dominant color to help separate foreground from background or character from setting and a second color as a spot color to add interest.

If you do go into black and white, then you'd need to put more effort into the lineart.
Case and point

Sorry I missed these updates. Love the comics you all are showing! I have noticed the moire effect when I've played around with screentones. Looks great up close, on my monitor when zoomed out, it has that strange effect monotone_ink showed.

I do like grays, but I'd love to do some screentones though I'm not sure how to pull it off. Larger screentones with lesser density?

For the time being I've kept my comic in color, though I wouldn't mind testing the waters with an issue or two with screentones.

If you're gonna go screentone, I don't know if you use Photoshop or not, but the Kyle Webster screentone and halftone brushes are amazing because you can do this really neat gradient effect? Super highly recommend and they come free with Photoshop CC.

AFAIK, manga is still black and white. Maybe change from color to black and white and English to Japanese?

Black and white is LOT easier if you use it sparingly. I rarely have to flat. If I went to color I'd be flatting almost all the time.
