I'm really new to this whole digital art thing. I bought Clip Studio pro EX about a month ago.

I've seen that a number of you use this program and was hoping we could have a help thread for it. We could share ideas and get answers quicker than reading the manual or looking online through tutorials.

My current issue is this:

In the preview it shows color. But then when I make the actually speech bubble/balloon it defaults to black and white, and makes the color look almost like a screentone. I can change it to color setting after I make the bubble, but it doesn't ever look like the preview. Not all the speech bubbles do this though, but most of them do. I would really like my preview to look like what it is making. How can I do this?

Cell shading is the easiest
Draw on a line or normal layer
Make a new layer and make it multiply and use the bucket tool to fill
Then use a darken layer and lower the opacity to do shadows
Then finish up with multiply layer air brush to add gradient

And after that ur gucci

OP, the easier way to do it would be to make sure that your page properties are set to color when you open a new canvas. When you hit "New File", check to make sure the "basic expression color" is set to Color (the other two choices being Black and White, and Greyscale). Then all of your raster layers will be set to color.

They are set to color, yet I still experience this issue with speech balloons.

Speech Balloons have two options for changing color - changing the line color, and changing the fill color. Make sure you change both if you're trying to change the entire color of the balloon.

I understand all of that. But that's not the issue here. If you look at the preview they give you, it should be red, but when I make the balloon it is monochromatic. I just want the preview to be what I actually get, because I am trying to add color and it's not doing it.

For your firework, change the expression color to red/another color or red. The previews are just there in bright colors to help you see the pattern on a tiny small scale.

You circled where you need to change it to color.

Yep that did it!! Thanks so much! I knew it had to be something simple.

No Problem beta1042,

I know it could be very frustrating starting out on Clip Studio Paint, I've been there myself.

No hard feelings to the product, but I found that the Official Documentations are not user friendly, and there is something off about the English.

Not to mention, the "How to" section regarding its usage at their official website doesn't help shed light to a satisfactory degree. Even here, their tutorials are worded strangely in English, and the videos are more of "This is what CSP can do," oppose to real tutorials.

It definitely takes greater effort for users not fluent in Japanese to get acclimated. CSP's English speaking community loses out to Photoshop's rich history of educational resources. Even YouTube and other net tutorials and resources are all over the place with varying quality. But... Where there's a will there's a way!

Be sure to post more questions, I'm sure the community will do the best they can to help, that includes me, but I can't promise that I will be able to answer in a timely matter. Best of luck in your endeavors! =))

THIS all day. Either you have to find the answer in a forum like this from someone who has experience, or on Youtube.

Preach on my brethren! :joy:

I'm very glad I've made it through the tunnel, my initial crash course was crazy, I spent 6 months straight figuring out CSP until I was able to be somewhat confident, and even then I'm finding new things to surprise me all the time! I'm still accumulating knowledge and experience with it to this day. I wouldn't say I'm a know-it-all when it comes to CSP, but I'm confident I can answer a lot of questions for sure.

P.S. CSP is an AMAZING amazing software, it's so powerful, and I've never had it crash on me, unless I go overboard and use too much memory.

The only downside that I know of is that, it is very complicated to create seamless tiles in CSP. Compared to programs like Krita or Paintstorm Studio which let's you toggle into seamless tile drawing mode. Heck, you can even make seamless tiles in Blender. :astonished:

If they ever create a seamless tile mode, I daresay I'd be happy without any more feature updates for the rest of my life for CSP, but having more features couldn't hurt! :yum:

Yeah, that's why I thought this thread may be helpful. It was a rather specific question that couldn't really be answered easily by tutorials.

I actually love CSP. Every week I learn so many new things that make my life that much easier when drawing, and definitely coloring.

I have thought of another question. I noticed there is this clip studio assets section where you can download 3d images and backgrounds and patterns and stuff. Are those just free to use? Like legally am I obligated to do something in terms of preventing copyright infringement? Is it only an issue if I were to try and make money off my comic(I currently have no intent on that atm) Half the stuff I see or more is in Japanese and the translations the computer makes are not always clear. So just wondering if you know anything about it.

You only need to worry about the "Limited License Material." In which case, you have to read the "broken" English very carefully, it will tell you restrictions right on the main page of the asset.

Aside from that, all the others have a "Free" tag. You can use them in your own works for free without any copyright infringement, and the uploaders are obligated to make sure their uploads are original and aren't causing infringement issues either.

Just don't try to modify or redistribute the assets by themselves, that is all.

Again, it's free to use in your own creative works unless it explicitly says so on the main page of the asset, don't modify or distribute assets themselves.

You can try and download adobe acrobat dc and use the plugin that lets you print the pages as a pdf. I never tried on Clipstudio but it work on the older version.
