A few days ago, on Instagram, I made a few posts advertising commissions and my Ko-fi. I ended up getting a ton of spammy comments and DMs from fake people and promotion accounts. They leave comments like "Cool art (emoji) DM me!" And it seemed like they were a new fan, possible client, friend, etc. until they drop their prices for promoting your work and worse buying followers.

Sadly, I did pay one of these guys since at the time I didn't know better (I did not buy followers, though). I mean, they DID promote my art and didn't just take the money and run, but that just opened the floodgates for more of those accounts to bug me. Most of these accounts followed me and liked some of my stuff, but they were doing it to get me to buy their services. I have blocked and deleted their messages/comments and so far it's died down.

Is this common when posting about commissions/ko-fi/patreon etc. Or is it some weird coincidence that spammers decided to strike that same day?

To anyone who hasn't gone through this yet, just ignore and block any messages/comments from these people/bots.

Recently, whenever I post art those people seems ready to comment on mine.

  • I almost never DM people who I don't know, or not an artist themselves.
  • Always check their profiles first. Sometimes you can't tell it's fishy (e.g. everything is blank, private, or having so many followers but never post, or everything is a repost)
  • If a stranger praise me with generic shit like "cool art" or "I really enjoy your story" I immediately assume it is a scam.

Fr these accounts are annoying as hell and they're making post on Instagram annoying. Recently I've gotten into the habit of fucking with these bots by posting copypostas of shit like raid shadow legends and top ten hottest sonic girls. Won't really solve anything but it's funny to do and I suggest anyone do this if they get these comments :).

It doesn't have to be a commission post, I just posted a simple comic panel and FOUR spam comments appeared at ONCE. Probably anything with art tags will attract them. And I never interacted with them, I've always deleted and blocked them immediately, but they still come.
Instagram has been so f*ing annoying lately.

I often get those kinds of comments. I post with art tags, and immediately i get comments saying "love it! Dm (insert name here)" i sometimes delete those comments, and sometimes i block their accounts, and most of the time i ignore it. I dont find it annoying yet tho, its just...comments afterall.

Tho maybe ill try messing with them someday haha

@saltycyka @euphisa Most of them were obviously fake, especially the ones that commented on my poetry/song/videos. Like, yeah... I totally make poetry. I did come across a couple who seemed like genuine people. They had amateur photos of themselves instead of pictures of models and they started off sounding genuinely interested for awhile before dropping their prices.

@GloamingCat I just now realised that. I saw a painting of a guy and a cat and it also had those comments. I hope these bot accounts go away soon.

hey i don't know about commission, but bots are everywhere, i saw one on life insurance instagram page lol
