Well I'm from a small lesser known corner of Australia if anyone ever wanted to know stuff about it. I traveled to various states through out Aus and the slang and culture definitely varies from different factors. For one, in Darwin, where I lived (part of the outback) it's a little oasis at the end of a stinking hot red desert. 10 mins down the highway is bush which becomes more and more sparse until it's just red sand. We don't have four seasons. Only two. Wet season and Dry season. We technically have an unofficial third called the "build up" which everyone hates the most by far. The build up is around this time of year if I remember correctly because the clouds build up for the wet season. It brings with it very high humidity and no rain. It's the anticipation that kills, because it always looks like it's going to pour but never does.
We have 6 months of the wet season (summer) which is very hot. The rain doesn't cool you down though. The winds are warm and everything is just humid. I would always hack my hair off out of frustration during this period because having thick frizzy curls in that environment just kills. The dry season is winter and the best time to visit because most parks will be open. It's still hot though, just less humid.
Everyone who lives there learns to have a healthy fear of water. Never go swimming in the beach or undesignated billabongs/ water holes. Crocodiles are everywhere. It's a bit of a rougher place to live. People don't have time for your first world problems because it's a very 'hard yakka' culture. You're expected to do the work and not complain. People there curse like sailors and will laugh at you if you have problems with 'just a word'. We have a high mixture of Caucasian, Asian and Aboriginal population. During the dry season local markets open up every weekend. There's tons of fresh tropical fruit on sale and pretty much every food stall is from somewhere in Asia (and tastes amazing). The entertainment is usually indigenous bands, fire breathers and dancers. There's lots of jewelry and craft made by indigenous and local folk alike.
Something interesting: During world war 2 the city was bombed by the Japanese (Darwin is considered the gateway to Asia so it's a very strategic location.) Despite that, I never met a single person there who had anything bad to say or think about the Japanese. No one really cares that it happened beyond just recording that bit of history. Another major historical event: Cyclone Tracy of 1974, Christmas eve, I believe. It completely obliterated the city. Ever since, everyone takes cyclone warnings super seriously. (Wet season is cyclone season.)
