Do you ever forget how to draw your own OCs?

Yes! I often mix them up with other characters, or accidentally create a halfway point between the character and a "default" person. Which is why references of a sort help, whether it be a character profile or a previously-drawn page...

Ohhh, yes!! For my current series, Slim Piggy, I drew up and inked a back-log of twenty-some pages before releasing my comic. As I released it, however, I would have to add in a page here and there. Inevitably, when drawing a new page, I'd forget little tidbits of how my own damn characters looked. I'm sure there are still inconsistencies I've missed in there.

More often than I should I have to go find out which bunny ear is supposed to be bent on comic Hop. (it's the left btw) And even then I fuck it up from time to time.

Also! Fun story: I went to a comic convention a couple years back that Glen Keane (legendary Disney animator-- he's designed so many of their best characters) was attending- he was signing autographs and someone asked him for a Beauty and the Beast sketch. He said something like "oh let's see if I can remember how to draw him" and then did a rough sketch. It surprised me at the time, but thinking back it totally makes sense that he hasn't memorized everything.

So I guess the moral of the story is that forgetting char designs even happens to the greats

I don't normally have trouble with specific details, like which side of a character's face is scarred, but I have entire days where they're inconsistent in broad strokes. Stuff like height and shape face. It isn't that I've forgotten either. My brain knows exactly what they should look like. My hand is the one that can't figure it out.

But every now and then, those accidents look kinda cool and I'm like "Oh, okay, his hair just looks like that from now on." So it's good not to cling too hard to a design and get flustered when you can't make it work. You might surprise yourself.

If it's been a while since I drew them (and they don't have any features that stand out), then yes, I do forget how to draw my OCs. I often have to make references pages for myself juuuust in case. Other times I just forget to add small details. :'D

I try to make my characters look vastly different from each other for this reason, but sometimes you have plain, normal folk in your stories...

I forget all the time, (especially those damn freckles) but I like to let then organically evolve as I draw. I try and go off memory of characters to add a bit more surreal dreamlike feeling to the world. Every panel is a bit different, every scene they change a bit. Colors are just what feels good at the time. Its more relaxing to me then a more animation friendly perfection. Eventually, six hundred pages from now, they might let me know how they actually look.

I just remembered, when I drew Amberlee, my main OC, for the first time, she had a beauty mark on her face and I totally forgot about it and just kept drawing her without it. Years later, I was looking trough my DeviantArt and saw that little detail and I was like " Oh, well, sht..."
And if anyone asks, I will just say that she got it removed..... 🙈

Usually... yep, specially when the character hasn't appeared or doesn't appear that much in the comic, or also PARTS I don't use to draw that much so I forget details, fortunately I drew references drawings of the characters otherwise it would be awful xD

If I come back from a long hiatus I may forget certain features to the characters design. Fortunately most of it gets embedded in my head as long as I work on it.

I have to refer back to references of all of my OCs because i'm always forgetting the minor details each one has. I like to be consistent with my OCs so I have to check back every time I create a new page so they don't end up looking different on every page xD.

As embarrassing as it is to admit it, I too sometimes forget how to draw my OCs. It usually happens when I'm forced to take a month or more break from drawing them. I now make a point to do some kind of a character concept page. That really helps refresh my memory lol!

I had a brain fart some time ago when I forgot how many fingers my characters had.

I started cartoony-style with four fingers, then as the series became more adventurous, we introduces several alien species with various numbers of fingers per hand (at the moment ww have three, four, five and even six). One day I was in a rush to finish the page because I had another job queued and I found myself drawing the main characters with five fingers for the entire page. Thankfully I noticed that before publishing, so I could go back and fix everything.

All the time especially with my newest series The Working Stiff. I did some initial sketches for the main character but other than that I have been designing all of the characters as I draw them into the strip. I've gotten to the point now where I have noticed some inconsistencies. Part of this is due to the natural evolution but I think its also that I never had a definitive design for anyone.

To resolve this I am currently in the process of creating proper character model sheets for all of my regularly recurring characters. The nice benefit of this is now that I'm examining them further It's smoothing out some of the things I didn't like.

On the flip side I've been doing autobio comics for years and I can pretty much "draw myself" with my eyes closed at this point.

I'm sure that if your characters are very detailed and complex, it must be hard to remember how to draw them. I keep my characters quite simple , like in the outfits and such. So it's not really hard to forget them ^^'

All the time, good lord. Sometimes I have to stop mid-ink and triple check to make sure I'm getting the design right and that its just not my head messing with me again. I find it easier to remember though if I just doodle the characters doing silly things whenever I'm not working on my comic!

I've got SO many ocs but i didn't forget them....i think..I still remember their looks but some parts i forgot...Dammit.
