Do you ever forget how to draw your own OCs?

Ah yes, yes it does >.> sometimes I forget that a certain character has a freckle under their eye or that another character has hair longer on one side along with a purple-ish split tongue.

Constantly lmao. It caused a bit of trouble when I had just left the hiatus. I kinda forgot how to draw one character and another character.....

I have super trouble with noses. Sometimes I'll make a nose too big for one character. And then too small on another character.
If the character has a mole/beauty mark/ scar i will have to constantly recheck where it is and size

And depending on the style of hair I'll need refrence. Big poofy hair needs more refrence since i needto know where it is parted and shaped.

And always for cloths i have folders and folders of drawn refrence for my characters cloths.

This happens to me a lot, sometimes with how hair falls and such.

Sometimes I even go "oh okay yeah I remember now" months pass and I find an old drawing and realize how off I was but this new style just looks better now. And then it's just minute details like say.....a hat. A whole hat.

I think one that legitimately scared me was that I forgot how long a character's arms were, and I kept trying and nothing was looking right. I was so frustrated like...how do you just forget to draw one character's arms and everyone else looks okay. |"D

Other than really stupid continuity mistakes, I do find that I forget the specifics of a character's facial features if I don't draw them in a while. I had to return to the characters for my first comic when I was putting together an extra mini-comic for the print version of the comic, and I struggled to get them looking right for a while

It normally happens that I remember their clothes and hairstyle, but they look completely different. The face is just someone else's and the body complexion sometimes as well, even if I remember their clothes, they might fit slightly different and be shorter/longer. Conclusion, I do forget how my characters look.

Because I do fully painted illustrations for each panel of my comic, it takes a bit longer to produce each page. Therefore, I'll span several weeks without painting a certain character, so that when I come back to the character, it'll look different because I forgot what techniques and proportions I used. One character in particular looks noticeably different in every single update she's featured in- even though like 10 minutes have passed in the story. I finally made a model-ref sheet for her, and I think it's starting to stabilize now, but when I was working without it, her design changed every time.

Dude, like I dont even have complex characters and I have a hard time with simmetry, that's why I left other series and ended up with a basic form of drawing till I have more time to do them ; )

Yeah it happens often these days with my older characters not so much with my newer ones though strangely enough.

I've got a really weird kind of partial face-blindness, which means my brain tends to scramble known facial features, making it hard to remember exactly how it all fits together (though I have no issues recognising people in real life), so I forget stuff like this a LOT.

And while facial features are the biggest issue, I forget all sorts of things. I can't TELL you how many times I've accidentally drawn Masahiro holding stuff with his left hand. You know, the hand he doesn't have any more.

I almost always have the previous page open while I sketch the new one, just to make sure I'm staying somewhat coherent.

Yes! I often mix them up with other characters, or accidentally create a halfway point between the character and a "default" person. Which is why references of a sort help, whether it be a character profile or a previously-drawn page...

Ohhh, yes!! For my current series, Slim Piggy, I drew up and inked a back-log of twenty-some pages before releasing my comic. As I released it, however, I would have to add in a page here and there. Inevitably, when drawing a new page, I'd forget little tidbits of how my own damn characters looked. I'm sure there are still inconsistencies I've missed in there.

More often than I should I have to go find out which bunny ear is supposed to be bent on comic Hop. (it's the left btw) And even then I fuck it up from time to time.

Also! Fun story: I went to a comic convention a couple years back that Glen Keane (legendary Disney animator-- he's designed so many of their best characters) was attending- he was signing autographs and someone asked him for a Beauty and the Beast sketch. He said something like "oh let's see if I can remember how to draw him" and then did a rough sketch. It surprised me at the time, but thinking back it totally makes sense that he hasn't memorized everything.

So I guess the moral of the story is that forgetting char designs even happens to the greats

I don't normally have trouble with specific details, like which side of a character's face is scarred, but I have entire days where they're inconsistent in broad strokes. Stuff like height and shape face. It isn't that I've forgotten either. My brain knows exactly what they should look like. My hand is the one that can't figure it out.

But every now and then, those accidents look kinda cool and I'm like "Oh, okay, his hair just looks like that from now on." So it's good not to cling too hard to a design and get flustered when you can't make it work. You might surprise yourself.

If it's been a while since I drew them (and they don't have any features that stand out), then yes, I do forget how to draw my OCs. I often have to make references pages for myself juuuust in case. Other times I just forget to add small details. :'D

I try to make my characters look vastly different from each other for this reason, but sometimes you have plain, normal folk in your stories...

I forget all the time, (especially those damn freckles) but I like to let then organically evolve as I draw. I try and go off memory of characters to add a bit more surreal dreamlike feeling to the world. Every panel is a bit different, every scene they change a bit. Colors are just what feels good at the time. Its more relaxing to me then a more animation friendly perfection. Eventually, six hundred pages from now, they might let me know how they actually look.

I just remembered, when I drew Amberlee, my main OC, for the first time, she had a beauty mark on her face and I totally forgot about it and just kept drawing her without it. Years later, I was looking trough my DeviantArt and saw that little detail and I was like " Oh, well, sht..."
And if anyone asks, I will just say that she got it removed..... 🙈
