I don't think I ever hate-read.
I sometimes read things I don't like 'for research purposes' (but, really ), and I also sometimes read 'so bad it's good' things (I especially like the type where the author has grand ideas and high quality expectations, fail miserably, but their story is very pleasant to read on a simple, down to earth level. A bit sad though, as I always feel these kind of authors could do superb things if only they dropped the high expectations...)
that's not quite what hate-reading is for, though! to repeat my previous comment: hate-reading and plain hating something are very different. hate-reading is reading something with the intent to understand what you dislike out of it as a vessel for self-growth in a context you (as a content creator who's too close to your Own stuff) can't always do without a safe-space context (which would be talking about what you dont like about someone Else). it's a form of discovery and exploration of your own thoughts, morals and preferences in regards to how people act as creators and in a less philosophical sense if youre not into that, what tropes, stylization, and devices you might be using without noticing they're not that great
that said there is absolutely a point to be made about moral viewership and giving views to something you deem morally wrong, which is it's own thing and has work-arounds and theres a lot of debate to be made (which id love to do, but my comment is plenty long already)
@darjodo and @Enigma_the_Slimy_Boi this response is also for u buds
I did. When Tapas made "free comics Saturday", I read not only those premium comics, which cause me interest and good attitude, but also those ones, which piss me off (namely, the most cliched ones with especially sweety-glossy art). I read them and got angry at each cliche again and again.
But I haven't done it for last two months or so, because it started to bother me at some point.
Maybe when I'll see new especially irritating comics, I'll start to do it again.
Yup its both fun and can provide entertainment. If its so bad its good Its hilarious, I remeber a meme started off between me and my brother while I read something crappy outloud.
However when its bad and I just dislike it I just read it to completion out of my stupid determination. I hated the unfunnies by mark miller but I still read to completion for that reason. I'm like I started that piece of garbage and I'm going to end that piece of garbage.
The only thing I don't hate-read is when its boring. Then its just a waste of time, because that doesn't really offer much fun to me even with my stupid determination.
Thou there was one thing that turned into a very incestuous and uncomfortable and I just stopped because I was getting to uncomfortable and It wasn't that good. But maybe I would go back and finish it because I'm dislike not completing things and Im stupid.
..
Yes and no? lol
There was something popular I started that I was interested in, but I was less and less happy with it over time. I stopped reading it when I started to hate it though, but I definitely got far enough to be pissy about it for several chapters. I don't generally hate read comics, because I'll just get sick of it after a while. No judgement to hate reading, though, it can be weirdly fun to gripe about something in your head or to friends. Plus there's an aspect to it of analyzing the things you like and dislike that is useful for developing your craft.
I intentionally hate read Twilight when I was younger. I wasn't trying to be trendy, I genuinely hated it. But only read it because my friends joke-gifted it to me, and I figured, screw it, I'm going to read it, and you're going to hear in detail all the things I hate! Really find that silly now, but I had fun, so whatever!
Hmm.. What you call hate-reading sounds a lot closer to just analyzing a guilty pleasure from the description you gave off in the replies. Same thing what other people saying about enjoying stuff that's "so bad, it's good".
I've always seen hate-reading as just actively hating on something you won't stop reading. This one's just being irrationally mean. I can see the benefits of the other two things I mentioned earlier, but not hate-reading. I've never done it, never seen a reason to do it. It just sounds like really toxic behavior tbh
Most of the stuff I have hate read was Family Circus and other boomer humor like comic strips.
The only long form I have hate read were mangas my sister checked out from the library. One was Mars and the other was Death Note. People told me Death Note gets better but I just ended up hating it the whole time.
