Since tapas hosts both comics and novels I thought I'd ask!
I have both my current comic and the sequel novel I'm making for it, so I love both mediums! (I was originally going to make the sequel a comic, but I ended up deciding not to because of other comic projects I had planned)
I personally prefer comics and here's why:
- I really enjoy comics as a visual storytelling medium. I'm able to have the audience see my characters, locations and events as I pictured them because they're directly looking at my art. People can also spot details such as a character's expression, their hand gestures ect without it needing to be pointed out.
- I love making art! I really enjoy seeing my art from the first sketch to completion, and it feels nice to always have something to draw because I'm furthering the story.
- I don't have to work in silence- I can have background noise on to listen to as I work. I find that with writing I need to be fully focused in order to get work done.
- It's a good mix of both artistic and written skills, and as I love both it feels like the perfect medium for me. I also don't particularly love describing things, so having my art say it for me is nice.
- My art is a big draw in for audiences to read my story. If you have nice art, it certainly helps with finding an audience for your story. I've had people only start reading my story for the art, which can be certainly hard when you're trying to promote a novel.
Why I love writing novels:
1. I feel I have much more freedom to write more. Quite simply, comics take AGES to get done. 10 pages of script equated to 50 comic pages! But with writing, I feel like I'm allowed to add more and flesh out characters without it taking more years off my life
2. I get to narrate- I love describing little things about my characters and stories that led to them to be the way that they are. I love how you can use words to paint a picture in someone's head. I think that's amazing.
3. Editing is much easier. When I finish a comic page and it has an issue, I either have to redraw parts of or whole sections. With writing, I feel it's easier for me to go back on past decisions.
4. I don't have to draw/design backgrounds. I can just describe them. I think that speaks for itself
