Since tapas hosts both comics and novels I thought I'd ask!

I have both my current comic and the sequel novel I'm making for it, so I love both mediums! (I was originally going to make the sequel a comic, but I ended up deciding not to because of other comic projects I had planned)

I personally prefer comics and here's why:

  1. I really enjoy comics as a visual storytelling medium. I'm able to have the audience see my characters, locations and events as I pictured them because they're directly looking at my art. People can also spot details such as a character's expression, their hand gestures ect without it needing to be pointed out.
  2. I love making art! I really enjoy seeing my art from the first sketch to completion, and it feels nice to always have something to draw because I'm furthering the story.
  3. I don't have to work in silence- I can have background noise on to listen to as I work. I find that with writing I need to be fully focused in order to get work done.
  4. It's a good mix of both artistic and written skills, and as I love both it feels like the perfect medium for me. I also don't particularly love describing things, so having my art say it for me is nice.
  5. My art is a big draw in for audiences to read my story. If you have nice art, it certainly helps with finding an audience for your story. I've had people only start reading my story for the art, which can be certainly hard when you're trying to promote a novel.

Why I love writing novels:
1. I feel I have much more freedom to write more. Quite simply, comics take AGES to get done. 10 pages of script equated to 50 comic pages! But with writing, I feel like I'm allowed to add more and flesh out characters without it taking more years off my life
2. I get to narrate- I love describing little things about my characters and stories that led to them to be the way that they are. I love how you can use words to paint a picture in someone's head. I think that's amazing.
3. Editing is much easier. When I finish a comic page and it has an issue, I either have to redraw parts of or whole sections. With writing, I feel it's easier for me to go back on past decisions.
4. I don't have to draw/design backgrounds. I can just describe them. I think that speaks for itself

I prefer comics, mainly because I can actually focus on making them. I've tried writing books before, and always, always, have a hard time with 'em. They're simply impossible for me to both write, and read. Mainly due to lack of visuals, which, unlike comics, need to be described along with character dialog, and it's simply too much information for me to retain, even with books I do have an interest in. With comics, I can just focus on writing/reading character dialog and let the illustrations speak for themselves.

Basically, and pictures worth a thousand words.

Novels are a one of kind for me. I don't read, but story-telling is one of my most favorite thing I can do in my spare time. There is nothing more I can say other than to simply put that story-telling allows me to literally play god.

Comics, comic creation is a different situation. When making comics, for once, I want to feel accomplished. I want to feel that I did something and prove that I did it. Drawing is still relatively new to me, even though I started two years ago. 1 year ago for traditional art. But that does not matter, ok maybe a little. I have my thoughts and emotions stating what I draw freakin sucks, but I truly have fun with it!

Comics because I'd like my story and characters to be visualized rather than entirely in text. It's an opportunity to showcase sweeping pictures and expressive characters. Also I'm a visual person.

Comics all the way. I always have a hard time describing what's happening in writing and it's way easier to just... draw it and show the reader.

I prefer comics because:

•Walls of text are quite intimidating, unlike images that are so easy to read and understand.

• I've already spent a lot of time learning visual storytelling, so I want to use it a bit before going for another medium.

• I like to draw and comics are a good way to test my drawing skills.

I read comics all my life and never been into novels, that´s why I also create comics.
I do read but it´s technical books about drawing/writing or life advice usually.
I read short stories. When I was a kid my brother had to read the speech bubbles
to me because I was too lazy to read them, I often skipped the speech bubbles
when there was too much text in it. I think that´s a personality thing, I like rock´n´roll
songs which are primitive and not longer than 2,5 minutes, exaggerated comics,
short stories, Bukowski books, I´m just not a novel guy

Comics, however while I'm not a novel writer it is a medium that I sometimes enjoy (mostly more in a loose setting like an roleplaying thread). There's something about a novel that allows your imagination to go free. While a comic determines everything you witness.

IKR??? Descriptions are ... SO ... ARGHHHHHHH

But yes, comics for me as well :'D

(I do struggle with reading descriptions as well; even if a piece of description is widely considered masterfully executed, my eyes tend to glaze over and it doesn't engage my 'imagination' at all XD As a consequence, while I consider fantasy one of my favourite genres, I've actually not read a fantasy novel for years and my favourite fantasy works skew heavily towards video games. Novels work best for me when it focuses on character drama, where setting and logistics is inconsequential :P)

I prefer making comics because it is easier.

I would at one point like to write a novel and push the boundaries of surrealism. I think an advantage it has is a more grounded “unreliable narrator”.

I would prefer to make comics since it's easier to promote but I'm really an artist yet and all I'm focusing on studying is bg art which wouldn't help me if I actually made a comic. I have a friend who's a better artist but he has other things to think about so I can't really ask him to make a comic for the novel that I'm making (Don't really know if we could make a profit with this as well so I don't really want to bother him any longer)

I chose to do comics because I don't think I'll be able to describe the characters, and the backgrounds such as cities, and castles in novels very well.

In comic, I'll be able to visualize it the way I want it and it was really fun to draw expressions on the characters, it makes them feel more alive than just reading their thoughts and reaction to a novel.

Plus, I'm not that great at grammar so my options are limited.

I prefer writing since I feel i can envision my characters better and I'm also happy when ever I write. I've tried drawing a couple times but they always turned out bad and i have little endurance for it.
Maybe someday I could actually practice and perfect my drawings.

Hmm... I guess it depends what medium fits the story best, and what medium you are most comfortable with...

Since I was little I wanted to be an author, so I wrote on a story, but never really liked what I wrote. It always felt clunky to me and never got across what I wanted. I ended up making a comic instead when I realised it was easier for me to draw what I imagined compared to "translating" my visualizations into words for a novel.

That said I far more enjoy reading novels to comics, as I get to imagine things on my own, which I often find way more entertaining than reading comics (I also often read late at night at dimmed light, so a coloured comic can be hard to fully enjoy...). That said I do have a nice collection of both manga and smaller western comics :3

Comics 100%. I've never been a words person, don't talk much in real life, I don't like to write. Was never able to put into words what I see in my head, at least without writing a practical novel just to describe it, then getting frustrated and quitting. Plus what takes a million years to put down in text I can do in no time with a drawing.

Comics are perfect for me because I can focus on visuals, expressing my thoughts and feelings in a way that's easier with text being a less important addition. Dialogue is important! You just don't need it that much when it comes to a visual medium where you can use the environment, expressions, camera angles, lighting and gestures to get the point across.

i draw so its managz for meh

not good with words and writing stuffz so i dont think i can be a good novelist :smiling_imp:

I prefer comics because I got mad ADHD and I honestly like showing people what's going on in my head. In short, I like pretty pictures. I'm very visual. THAT and it's easier to write dialogue.
