Do you share your Comics with your family?

Hi there!

Some weeks ago I created a thread here asking how many hours per week can you dedicate to create your own comics since I'm strugling to harmonize the time I've for family, work, leisure and comics.

I guess I face additional issues since I try to keep my comic all by myself. I mean, I dont share it nor discuss it with my family or friends. Dont ask me why. I just dont feel confortable in doing it. Ironically, I end up sharing with the world here on Tapas and on a facebook account I've created for this purpose.

So my curiosity goes to how you manage this with your inner circle? Do you share with them and discuss ideas about your story? Do you think it helps to be more productive? Personally, I find it awkward LOL

I share them with everyone. Levels of interest vary, but everyone is very supportive. (I'm 40 years old. Support was not always the case, but after years of being an artist the extended family has come around.)

While they are all kind and supportive, my extended family isn't necessarily my audience. They really don't "get it."

Even my wife (another artist, but contemporary art as opposed to illustration), doesn't fully get my passion for comics, but she is my first editor when I need some feedback.

Nope. They'll ask about my work every now & then, but for the most part they dont ask and I dont share.

Only when there's something physical on hand, like a printed version. My family can't wrap their heads around the enjoyment of reading a comic on the PC or phone, they're from the times they had to buy Tex, Monica's Gang, etc on a store and they don't pay it any mind if I post links or show my process, with one or two exceptions.

Sometimes, but I don't like to. I have a weird hang-up about sharing my work with people I actually know. Occasionally when I'm worried something isn't good, though, I'll show it to a sibling -- those are always more honest about what you make than parents. I DID explain to my mom what Webtoon is though so I think she follows me now :T

Heck yeah I do. My parents and siblings are my alpha readers, I run the draft ideas by them first and they tell me what's stupid and needs to be fixed.

I do share my comic with family and friends, though only a few friends care about it. Still, those few friends are very important because I can discuss and brainstorm ideas with them.

The overall reception is a lot better if I show art that was made traditionally (usually acrylic paintings), which is kinda frustrating because I spend a lot more time and effort in my digital art. They don't say it, but I feel deep down my relatives have the idea that digital art is easier to make than traditional art. That, or maybe they just don't understand how digital art is made because they are unfamiliar with the medium.

I show and discuss it with friends, but not with family...
Because you can choose a friends, who'll sincerely try to understand you, like your personality and will be at least somehow close to you in their mindset and interests. Which increases the chance that they'll like your creative works, too. Or, at least, that they'll not try to hurt you for it, even if they'll not like it.
But you can't choose a family...

Well, of course, theoretically, my family can find my comics by themselves and understand that it's mine. And start to tell loads of shit about it and about me. But I have no reasons to force this process by myself.

I do. Though they don't seem to read it, or if they do they don't say much about it to me.

Well, my parents do follow me on Instagram, so they know what I drew last summer But since I post in English, they cannot read it.
They were never particularly invested in what exactly I am drawing, I definitely never shared the topics of my art and I don't believe they will be interested in the comic at all. They know I "draw anime"

Although I may have told my mom that Gil is my brother's character, so she makes him study English by reading Hexameron I suppose

My husband helps me write The Chevalier and my best friend writes Goblins of Razard, both comics that I illustrate.

My two kids really love to draw, so I try to have them working on an art activity while I'm drawing. Often my toddler sits in my lap with his coloring book while I try to use my tablet. It doesn't work well persay, but its the only way I can keep up with anything. I also don't do comics that are visually disturbing to kids (even if they aren't the target audience), so its not really a problem. My family is pretty supportive, so that's nice.

Only once I started doing it for a living. They were always kind of interested and/or mildly concerned about the thing I had been close to ruining my life for .

But now that I’m financially secure they love it and always brag to their friends about me. It’s super cute.

When I was in high school, my dad was the one and only audience for my kids-doing-shenanigans story then.
But nowadays I don't actively share my work with my family, aside from my husband, whom I also made read The Witch's Throne when it had a free day since I really like that comic.

Though I did ask my mom to do a quick edit pass over one of my comics too before I made it available for POD on Amazon. And although I don't actively share my other work, my mom knows I have a Tapas account and has browsed some of my work that way.
She's even checked out my novel and said it was good but I don't know how far she got because that thing has some spicy scenes.

Yep! Even asked for some feedback for some of my developing scripts. My family is really big into art and like to consume it in different ways (music, paintings, operas, etc.)
They might not actively read my stuff (which -- thank god, cuz I DO have some spicy scenes), but they know about my comics and are happy to take a peek.

I share it with my little brother, who breaks the rules like I do (sort of a "doctrine of MAD" situation), and my older sister, who doesn't think it's a problem.

Other than that my family doesn't know I post anything I make.

No and don’t plan to. My dad can’t tell the difference between a comic strip or an avengers movie and doesn’t care about my work. My mom straight up called my recent comic hipster garbage for angsty teens.... safe to say I have 0 to do with her lol

Only my friends see them cause friends are better than family when it comes to it sometimes.

I don't really talk about with friends until asked, the only time I was the one who started talking about it is when I just wanted to see if my idea is worth into making a comic

With my family, I don't think they really know what is knocking (they probably never even heard this word in my opinion), so they usually just see it themselves...
