Hello! I’ve been working on my comic for a good while now, and since very early on I knew I wanted it to be in color, just because I personally think it’s more visually interesting.

Turns out color takes a really long time to add in, and my pages take around 7-8 hours to complete, so I was contemplating doing my next series in B&W.

In your opinion do you enjoy colored comics as you do B&W? Does color (lack there of) add to your experience? What do you personally prefer?

Unfortunately, color is always going to attract more readers. And now that Korean webtoons have spoiled audiences by being in color, it's quickly becoming an unofficial standard.

Speaking as a creator though who knows the work coloring needs, I don't mind if a comic's in black in white/grayscale. Color can definitely add to an experience, but having a series in black and white does not detract from it at all. Actually I really LOVE when a series pulls off black and white well! Some really good ones are:

It doesn't affect me, and I actually prefer mangas to webtoons. But I'm not the majority, I believe.

But with that being said, it'll definitely help you attract visibility and it matters for a majority of the readers. (Whenever I read b/w webtoons, the comments are always: but why b/w?! Can you colour please??)

There's this one webtoon I know that isn't fully colour, but only in areas (I think it started with her lips only):

(But the author is kind of well known)

But it really adds to the atmosphere~

(I know there are probably lots, but this is the first one I thought of strongly  )

Like @joannekwan said people are more likely to read color then B&W

However I do think some comics benifit from B&W over color, usually darker themed stories or tragedies- horror especially feels better for me in B&W then color. comics with a lot of night time scenes are also lovely in B&W

I have a pretty strong preference for color, especially because I often run into issues telling characters apart and color tends to make that a bit easier. That said I have several B&W series in my library, so it's not a deal-breaker for me so long as I can follow what is going on. B&W with some limited uses of color to emphasize certain things can also be really cool and effective, and sometimes more enjoyable than having full color all the time.

I'm pretty old school, so to me, black and white is what I consider standard for a comic--but lately color has become the new standard and it's unfortunate because it does quadruple your work load, and when you're not really making that much more income it's like...is this 4x more readers? Really? And having done both, I think what brings people in is a mix of color with...other things.

I think with tapas the biggest thing to draw in people is consistency in updates and if it's legible on the phone--like color definitely brings in readers and it does engage certain readers more, especially those who may have some reading disabilities (like I know there are people who say that they can't see differences in characters unless things have color, which is interesting, and it does make sense since all of us have different ways that we read) but for me personally, I don't care either way, so long as it's legible, looks nice, and tells a good story.

I've had more exposure to manga growing up so I personally don't mind whether or not a series is in colour or not.

I feel you on colour taking longer. My first few one shots were in black and white. I was trying to emulate manga screentones because I love the texture it gives off. But it was pretty hard to pull off so I just stuck with colour.

I kind of give myself permission now to take me time with creating my pages

I tend to associate b/w with manga and color with Western comics just based on the fact that I loooove collecting... but it doesn't affect my experience one way or another as long as the art is good!

For me I find colours to be more visually appealing. However if there are too many colours that distracts me as well, hence I only outlined my characters.

I've stuck to a specific colour scheme too, throughout to maintain continuity.
In case you want to read the full thing

Well for me bad coloring can put me off. I quite like b&W or really just a limited pallet when its done well.
Thats the key I say it doesn't matter if its colour or not, it depends on the style and how it's used. A comic doesnt need colour , there are probably people out there that disregard comics due to lack of colour like some with movies but they don't know what they're missing. Art is only half the apeal.

And well back to style, colour will just make it blend into the other colour comics as well so you'd have to go the extra step to make it stand out even more!

My personal comic is coloured because I feel my drawings would be hard to understand it and I'm not gonna play around with shading etc. I'm here to tell my story so for me things like that are sacrificed, though I know it's different for every on.

As people are saying, colored comics have an easier time to grow popular. However, I personally think it depends on what type of story and mood you're going for. Sometimes you want color to tell a story, but many stories also work great in black and white, expecially if that fits the mood.

That said, mine is in grayscale mostly because of time related reasons :joy: and partially because I enjoy the style. But it would work just as well in color, if I had the time to really pull it off. But I know that I would become too perfectionist trying to work out color schemes and harmony.

I prefer comics with lots of colours. I grew up reading manga, lots of it even, but somehow I now enjoy web comics that splash lots of colours in their art. I am picky though, I need people to have a good art style before I dive in... not the prettiest trait of me, I know.

Can I show a comic I enjoy in terms of this? It's based on a novel, and they're a series of mini comics by @surenlicious. I love this art style, this artist has many in fact but she managed to select an art style for her comic that works for her. I know making comics are hard, and there are many styles to do one, but I like how she made hers. Its works in tandem with her written work.

Oh, and here's another one I like. Its...a bit much in terms of professional quality though and I certainly wouldn't force anyone to go WLOP's style, but I like this one too. It shows many many ways there are do to this in terms of fully rendered images, but I can only imagine what this level of quality might do to an artist.

Gaah, thank you so much for your sweet words! I am still new at making comics, like really new omg. I cannot express what it means to me to already have my work being enjoyed!

I think most comics on this site are in color, but personally I don't mind. I like the rough feel of BW comics though I think it's important the icon have some color otherwise it's just not eyecatching enough

I definitely prefer comics in color and 100% admit that I'm spoiled by color at this point. Usually I only like black and white when it fits with the tone of the story, so perhaps it's a bit more sad or realistic to real l life as I find that it really sets the mood. However, nine times out of ten I'll choose colored comics, even if they update less than black and white. Something that I really enjoy though are when there's stories in black and white with rare splashes of colors, for example, maybe only the eyes are colored or certain instances of the comic to really make me pay attention to an object, emotion, scene etc. That's an excellent way to make yourself stand out!

I really do like high quality B&W manga, but for beginner artist comics color is a cheap way tu upgrade visuals.
Also when you start coloring more you will begin to do it faster

Black and white comics are great, and colored comics are great too. It all depends on the comic and what your trying to express visually. Like for example, there is this Tapas comic called Carnivore that uses black and white coloring and is a horror comic. The color scheme helps add to the reading experience and I think if it had color it perhaps wouldn't have the same feel to it. But again, it all depends on how you use it to convey the story.
